No; 555,768. Patented Mar. 5-, 1895 Fig. 2..
INVENTOH WITNESSES. I @6544 26 7 '5 agww' A TTOH/VE) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. HEYER, -OF ST. JOI-INSBURY, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO THE E. dt T. FAIRBANKS & COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SCALE-BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,768, dated March 3, 1896.
Application filed January 16, 1895. Serial No. 585,111. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. l-IEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia, State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scale-Bearings, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in weighing-scales; and the object is to provide a device for limiting the movement of the lever-pivot in the direction of its length or transversely'of the beam or lever at the outside of the bearing. It is desirable that this limiting movement should be accomplished with a minimum amount of friction that there may be no danger of impairing the accuracy of the scale.
To this end the invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing the bearing complete. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the cap removed; and Fig. 4c is a view of the bearing and pivot without the end bearing for said pivot.
In the drawings, a represents the lever or beam of the scale, and b the knife-edge pivot secured at or near one end thereof. This pivot Z) is preferably beveled, as shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose hereinafter referred to. The post which supports the parts is shown at h, and is forked at its u er end in the usual manner. Between the forks is supported the block 0, of the shape shown, and in the apex of the groove, on the upper surface of which rests the knife-edge of the pivot b. This block 0 may be of any suitable material, such as an agate, steel, &c., but I have found it advantageous to use ablock of glass for this purpose on account of its frictionless qualities, and I therefore intend to make a claim for the same.
Removably secured to the post It and extending upwardly and having an inwardlyturned flange is a cap 61, so that when this cap is in position it with the forks practically incloses the end of the bearing-pivots b. This cap d is provided with an opening e, and on the interior surface adjacent to this opening is recessed to receive a glass plate g, which covers the opening and serves as an antifriction-bearing to limit the movement and receive the end-thrust of the pivot 17, which, by reason of the bevel above referred to, bears against it at only one point. This plate g is preferably of transparent glass, whereby the opening 6 with its glass backing affords practically a Window through which may be viewed the pivot and its support. It will be understood, however, that any other kind of glass, a jewel, or other vitreous material may be substituted for the transparent glass, particularly where it is not desired to view the pivot and its support from the exterior. Again, the entire cap-piece might be constructed of glass, or both the block 0 and plate 9 of one piece of glass, or the cap, plate, and block of one piece of glass. The cap cl is secured to the post in any suitable manner.
It will be seen that in the preferred form of my invention there is provided a frictionless limiting bearing-plate for the lever-pivot, a window through which the same may be observed, and a cap for holding the parts in position. Various modifications and changes may be made, however, without departing from the spirit of my invention by which a simple, cheap, and easily-replaced bearingis provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a scale-bearing the combination with the lever-pivot of a supporting-post therefor, a cap-piece arranged to cover the end of said lever-pivot and having an opening, said cap piece provided with an interior recess adjacent said opening, and a transparent plate of glass secured in said recess, arranged to receive the end-thrust of the pivot, whereby an antifriction-bearing for the end of the pivot is provided, and whereby also the movement of the pivot on its supporting-surface may be observed, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the lever-pivot, the bifurcated supporting-post, the cap-piece secured to said supporting-post, and having an In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. MEYER.
