TOOL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,733, dated March 3, 1896.
Application filed June 23,1893. Serial No. 478,671. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN S. NORTON, of Ogden, in the county of \Veber and Territory of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Tool-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved tool-holder which is simple and durable in construction and arranged for securely holding the tool in place, the device being especially designed for use on lathes and other machinery.
The invention consists of a bar adapted to be fastened in a tool-stock and a gravity-pawl pivoted in the said bar and adapted to engage the shank of the cutting-tool.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described, and then poin ted out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of the improvement, and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
The tool-stock A of a lathe or other piece of machinery is adapted to receive and hold in place a bar B, formed in one or both ends with a recess 0, into which fits the correspond ingly-shaped tool D, adapted to engage and cut the work in the lathe. The cutting-edge of the tool D extends upwardly, as plainly i11- dicated in Fig. 1, the tool being inclined and adapted to be secured in place in the bar 13 by a gravity-pawl E, fulcrumed at G in the bar and arranged in a recess F therein and having an outward opening through the side of the bar, so that the pawl may be inserted or removed laterally, as plainly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Now it will be seen that when the tool engages with its cutting-edge the work in the lathe a downward pressure is exerted on the said tool, whereby the pawl E will be forced firmly in contact with the back of the toolshank, so as to securely fasten the tool in position in the recess O. WVhen the tool is not in engagement with the work, it can be removed from the bar B by an upward and an outward pull, as the pawl E is free to swin 5 5 in that direction. The end of the pawl E, which contacts with the back of the shank of the tool D, is preferably toothed or serrated, as indicated in Fig. 1, but it may be smooth, as illustrated in full lines in Fig. 3.
The modified form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 shows a bar B, formed with an opening 0, through which extends the tool D, the latter being diamond-shaped in cross section, and the contacting end of the gravity-pawl E is \l shaped to engage the back of the tool, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 4. In the modified form the pawl E is fulcrumed at G in the bar 13 and extends in a transverse recess F formed in said bar, and the contacting faces of the pawl may be serrated, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
It is understood that the tool can be readily inserted in the holder or removed therefrom, and the bar may be conveniently shifted in the tool-stock and fastened therein, as the case may require.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A tool-holder, comprising a bar adapted to be fastened to a tool-post and having a vertical inclined opening for the passage of a tool and also having a recess communicating with the toolopening and having an opening 85 through the side of the bar and a pawl fulcrumed in said recess whereby it may be removed or inserted laterally, substantially as specified.
