CAST-OFF FOR SUSPENDERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,930, dated February 18, 1896.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, CHARLES R. HARRIS and WILLIAM FREEMAN, of Williamsport, in the countyof Lycomin g and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cast-Offs for Suspenders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperiains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to an improvement in cast-offs for suspenders; and it consists of two longitudinal bars and end bars for confining the web held by the cast-off between them, a finger enlargement formed on each of the longitudinal bars at a point outside of or beyond the adjacent end bar and a hook for detachably holding these longitudinal bars together.

It further consists in a pair of longitudinal bars, end bars, a hook for detachably fastening the longitudinal bars together at one end outside of the web, in connection with a metal clasp comprising a plate bent tightly around one of the longitudinal bars and adapted to connect the button-tabs thereto.

It further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a detached view of our improved cast-off. Figs. 2 and 3 are views showing the cast-off combined with clasps which connect the two rigidly together.

A and B are the two longitudinal bars, connected together at one end by the end bar 1. At the other end each longitudinal bar is bent inward toward the other, as at 2, to constitute another end, 3, between which and end 1 the web of the suspender is confined, as indicated in dotted lines. From this point the wire is bent outward in opposite directions to form projections or finger- pieces 5 and 6 to be grasped between the thumb and forefinger to unfasten the cast-off. From this point the wire is bent back inward again and the extreme ends terminate in hooks 7 and 8, one extending forward and the other bent laterally. It will be observed that the inward projections 2 2 overlap slightly, so as not to abut and form stops, which would be fatal to the successful operation of the castoif. Otherwise every part of the cast-off, except hook 8, is perfectly flat and in a single plane, so as to occupy just as little space as possible.

In Fig. 2 a flat metal clasp C is bent securely around the lower longitudinal bar to connect the tabs 9 9 to it, and to prevent these parts from rocking with respect to each other a slight lateral bend 10 is made in the lower bar. Also to give a neatappearance and an unobstructed interior the depression 11 is formed in the bar around which the clasp is folded, so that the edge of the fold is to all intents and purposes flush with the rest of the bar. By this construction any movement endwise or axially is absolutely precluded and the cast-ofi and clasp are as though one single integral piece or soldered together. This is desirable, as any movement at this point is injurious to the best results, it always being a desideratum to have the cast-off erect and uppermost.

In the form shown in Fig. 3 a small band 12 is folded around the lower bar and the slotted plate which connects the tabs to the cast-ofi. In other respects this is essentially the same as the other construction.

It will be observed that the projections or finger-pieces are always outside of the edge of the suspender-web, where they may be easily and quickly manipulated.

Having fully described our invention,what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As an article of manufacture, a cast-01f comprising two longitudinal bars and end bars for confining the web-held by the castoif between them, a projection or finger-piece connected with each longitudinal bar at a point outside of or beyond the adjacent edge of the web, and a hook for detachably holdingthese bars together.

2. As an article of manufacture, a cast-off comprising a wire bent to form two longitudinal wires, an end bar, a pair of inward bends constituting another end bar, then bent out Ward to form finger projections and terminating in hooks for fastening the longitudinal bars detachably together, substantially as set forth.

3. As an article of manufacture, a east-off for suspenders comprising a pair of longitudinal bars, ends, thumb-pieces on the free ends of the longitudinal bars, one of the longitudinal bars bent laterally and a metal plate rigidly secured around this laterally-bent portion whereby neither part can rock or move independently of the other, substantially as set forth.

As an article of manufacture, a cast-off for suspenders comprising a pair of longitudinal bars and ends, the former having fingerpieces thereon, one of these longitudinal bars bent laterally or depressed, and a clasp coinprising a plate folded around the laterally bent or depressed portion of the longitudinal bar, said plate substantially filling the laterally bent or depressed portion with its outer fold. or edge approximately flush with the adjacent portions of the bar, substantially as set forth.
