LAWN-SPRINKLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,628, dated February 11, 1896. Application filed July 23, i894- Serial No. 518,374. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LVALENTINE O. ROCHOLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort \Vayne, in the county of Allen, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Sprinklers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying 'drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lawn-sprinklers.
The object of my invention is to provide a rotary spray apparatus for use upon lawns and for other purposes of simple and economical construction so arranged that the discharg-' ing-nozzle is rotated by the force of the illflowing water under pressure, which enters the said nozzle through an opening arranged tangentially to its periphery by means of an internal deflecting-flange and is discharged through one or more small outlet-orifices in said nozzle in a delicate tenuous spray, which is thereby distributed over a considerable area, the extent of which is regulated by the amount and pressure of the inflowing water.
My invention consists of three parts: a stationary portion comprising a low supporting stand or base, and a supply-pipe integral with said base, having a vertical extension provided with a seat for the rotating nozzle, a revoluble upright nozzle, having a spiral flange adapted to receive the force of the inflowing water upon its inclined surface, thereby imparting to the said'nozzle a rotary motion, and a central longitudinal rod which forms a bearing at its upper extremity in a rigid standard, and a vertical standard removably mounted in the base and adapted to secure the revoluble nozzle'in position when in use.
The novel feature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement whereby a rotary motion is imparted to the revoluble nozzle, and whereby the same is secured in position when in use.
In the drawings forming part of this specification similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my invention, partly in section, showing the relative arrangement of the operating parts. Fig. 2 is a detail of the upper portion of the revoluble nozzle, showing the oblique top and the arrangement of the delivery-orifices therein. Fig 3 is a detail of the base, showing the means for securing the same to the base.
All parts of my improved spray apparatus are preferably of non-corrosive metal.
The base or standard 1 may be of any desired form or size adapted to properly support the surmounted apparatus. The supply-pipe 4E hasa globular portion 2 which rests upon and is rigidly secured to the said base, though I preferably cast the said supply-pipe integral with the said base, as shown. The said supply-pipe at has an internally-threaded annular flange 5 of proper size, preferably of greater diameter than the pipe 4, and is adapted to form a proper coupling with a suitable hose. The said supply-pipe also has a vertical tubular extension 3, the upper portion of which has a somewhat larger bore than the lower portion, and is so arranged as to form an annular seat therein-for the base of the revoluble nozzle.
The nozzle 6 is a metallic cylinder of any proper size, having upon its lower end an open cylindrical extensionS of less diameter, adapted to form a loose bearing in the said extension 3, as seen in Fig. 1.
The upper end of the nozzle 6 is inclosed by the integral oblique plate or cap 11, provided upon one side thereof with one or more disch-arging-orifices 14, Fig. 2, while its center is pierced by'the rod 10, which is centrally arranged within the said nozzle and is rigidly secured to the inner edge of the spiral flange 7, the outer edge of which impinges at all points against the inner surface of the said nozzle, and is thereby firmly held in place therein. The upper end of the said rod is needle-pointed and is adapted to form a bearing in a proper vertical perforation in the lug 12 or other proper device or projection on the standard 9, as seen in Fig. 1.
The upright standard 9 may be of any de sired form or design suitable to provide a bearing point or seat for the upper end of the rod 10, for the purpose of securing and retaining the upper end of the nozzle 6 in position when in rapid rotation, but is preferably constructed as shown, and consists of a single wire in the form of a loop having both ends loosely inserted in suitable perforations in the said base and secured therein by the adjusting-screws 18.
The mode of operation of my invention thus described is briefly stated as follows: \Vhen it is desired to use my improvement, the hose is joined to the threaded flange 5 in a proper manner, the other end being connected to a hydrant or other proper water-supply under pressure. The apparatus is then placed in any desired situation upon the supportingbase 1, which will secure it in an upright position under all stages of water-pressure. The water then enters the nozzle (5 from the supplypipe 4:, the force of which is received upon the inclined surface of the said spiral flange, which extends throughout its length, as seen in Fig. 1. The force of the water under pressure thus imparted to the said nozzle by strikin g the deflecting spiral flange throughout its length causes the said nozzle to rapidly and continuously rotate .in its bearings, the water being continuously forced out through the outlet-orifices ll in a continuous spray. The arrangement of the outlet-orifices, whether one or more in number, upon one side only of the cap 11 imparts to the inflowing water a greater rotary force, for anobvious reason, and arranging the said cap obliquely is found by practical tests to be preferable to arranging the same in a horizontal position, though I do not hereby confine myself to such arrangement.
Having thus described my invention and the manner in which the same is to be applied, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lawn-sprinkler or rotary spray ap paratus, a revoluble nozzle comprising a cylinder open at its lower end, and having its upper end closed by a perforated cap, as shown and provided with a longitudinally-arranged spiral flange, as described, adapted to receive the force of the inflowing water upon its inclined face and thereby imparting to the said nozzle a rotary motion, all substantially as described.
2. In a lawn-sprinkler or spray apparatus, a revoluble nozzle properly mounted in a suitable base, as shown, having its upper end closed by a perforated cap for the purpose described, and provided with a spiral flange whose outer edge impinges upon the inner surface thereof, and is adapted to impart to the said nozzle a rotary motion by receiving throughout its length the force of the inflowing water upon its inclined face, in eombination with a suitable base having a proper retaining-seat for the said nozzle, and means for forming a proper connection with the hose, all substantially as described.
3. The combination in a lawn-sprinkler or spray apparatus, of a base comprising a stand or pedestal, and a supply-pipe having a vertical projection adapted to form a seat for the rotary nozzle, as shown, and having a threaded flange to form a union with the hose, a revoluble nozzle loosely mounted in said base as described, having its upper end closed by a perforated cap, and containing a spiral flange Whose outer edge impinges upon the inner surface thereof, and by its arrangement is adapted to impart to the said nozzle a rotary motion by receiving the force of the inflowing water upon its inclined surface, and. an upright standard rigidly fixed in said base and provided with means for securing the said nozzle in position, substantially as described.
4. In a lawn sprinkling apparatus, the revoluble nozzle 6 havinga dependent extension 8 adapted to loosely rest in the supporting-base, and an oblique perforated cap 1], as shown, and containing a spiral flange 7 whose outer edge impinges against the inner surface thereof, and is adapted to receive the force of the inflowing water upon its inclined surface, thereby imparting to said nozzle a rotary motion, in combination with a supporting-base consisting of the stand. 1 and the supply-pipe 4 having a vertical extension 25 forming a seat for the said nozzle, and having a threaded flange 5 to form a connection with the hose, and the vertical standard 9 removably mounted in said base, and having a dependent perforated lug 12 adapted to secure the upper end of the said nozzle in position, all substantially as described.
