BLIND-PAINTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,5?2, dated February 11, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER BECK, a citizen of Sweden, and a resident of Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blind-Painting Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved machine for painting blinds or articles of a similar nature, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a top plan View of the improved machine. Fig. 2 represents a detail section on the line 2 2 shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a detail section on the line 3 3 shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 represents a detail section on the line 4 tshown in Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
A represents a suitable base or the floor of the workshop in which the painting-machine is located. To 'said base or floor is secured a paint-holding tank B, which is preferably supplied with a suitable quantity of liquid paint from a sieve O, detachably inserted in a holder D, from which leads a spout (1 into the paint-tank B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. To the tank B is attached an inclined shelf E, having ledges e 6, upon which are placed detachable racks F F, in which the blinds G- G are put, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, after they have been immersed in the liquid paint contained in the tank B, as shown in full lines in Figs. 1, 3 and 4E.
After the blinds, one by one or more, have been immersed for a suitable length of time in the liquid paint contained in the tank B they are placed for a-short time in the racks F, to permit the superfluous amount of paint ,to drip off onto the inclined shelf E and returned into the paint-tank B, after which the now painted blinds are placed in the blindrotating device for the purpose of evenly distributing the paint over all portions of the blinds and partially drying the same.
The said blind-rotating device is constructed as follows: It consists of a frame II, in which are journaled a series of chucksI I, the spindles of which are preferably provided with pulleys t' 7 which are set in a rotary motion, preferably by means of a belt or cord 7c, leading from a rotary drum K, which may be rotated by means of a crank K or other suitable mechanism.

Any othersuitable mechanism may be employed for the purpose of rotating thechucks I without departing from the essence of my invention.
The other end of each blind is journaled or centered on a pivot l, forming part of a springpressed spindle L, sliding longitudinally in a frame M and actuated by a spring N to force and hold the pivot Z against the end of the blind G, as shown in Fig. 1.
As the blinds vary in length, I make the frame M adjustable to and from the frame H, and I have for this purpose shown in Figs. 1 and 2 rods 0 O secured to the frame M and adapted to slide in pipes or guides P P, secured to the frame H.
p p are set-screws screwed through the pipes P P against the rods 0 O for the purpose of securing the latter in their adjusted positions to the said pipes P P, according to the desired distance between the frames H and M.
After the blinds have been rotated a proper time for the purpose of distributing the paint evenly over their surfaces they are removed from the rotating-machine and put away to dry.
By this arrangement blinds and similar articles may be painted much more quickly and cheaply as compared with the usual handpainting method.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention,
-I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. In a blind-painting machine, the combination with the stationary frame H, of the rotary chucks I journaled therein, pulleys carried by said chucks, means for gearing said pulleys together, a frame M arranged opposite the frame H and adjustable toward and from the latter, spring-pressed spindles L journaled in the frame M in alignment with the chucks I, and means for fastening the frame M in its adjusted position, substantially as described.
