PUMP-OPERATING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 554,568, dated February 1 1, 1896. Application filed August 30,1895. Serial No. 560,961. (No'modeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alpha, in the county of Grundy and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Operating Mechanism, of which the following specification contains a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved lever mechanism applied to a pump. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same detached; and Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
The invention relates to lever mechanism for operating pumps from a windmill-rod or by hand.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, light, and inexpensive levermechanism carried by an open frame adapted at its lower end for easy attachment to the upper end of a pump-stock at the platform of the well. A further object is to so construct said lever mechanism that there will be little friction and the greatest amount of force obtained from the least outlay of power.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the claims.
A represents a verticallyarranged open elliptical frame, the curved side arms A of which are formed with slots A, while at the upper end of the frame a vertical slot A is formed, and the lower end of the frame terminates in an attaching-collar A adapted to receive the upper end of the pump-stock B and be held thereon by the transverse screws a. This frame is preferably cast in a single piece.
B is the pumprod guided at its upper end in the slot A and at its lower reduced end working through an aperture a in the closed upper end of the collar A to actuate the piston mechanism. (Not shown.)
C is a transverse lever having a loop 0 at its middle to receive the pump -rod B to which it is there pivoted by a pivot c, and one end of lever O is pivoted to the lower bifurcated end of a stirrup or link C pivoted at its upper end within the slot A of one arm A of the frame. The other end of lever C is pivoted to the lower end of a vertical link or rod D, which is guided within the slot A of the other arm A, as clearly shown in the drawings.
The upper end of the link or rod D is connected to the lower end of the windmill-rod E, so that it will be reciprocated by said rod E and in turn reciprocate the pump-rod B through its lever 0, both ends of which lie within the slots A and in such reciprocation of lever G the stirrup C will allow the necessary endwise movement and materially reduce friction.
F is a brace pivoted at its upper end in the lower end of that slot A in which stirrup O is pivoted, and the lower end of this brace is provided with an apertured foot F, by means of which it may be bolted to the platform of the well. This brace will hold the frame perfectly steady.
In order that the pump of B may be operated by hand I provide the following mechanism, viz: G is a vertical rod pivoted at its lower end to the bracket G, which is bolted to the platform. To the upper end of this rod G is pivoted the hand-lever H, the inner end of which pivots on the lever C. When pumping by hand link D will be disconnected from lever O. The vertical rod G is free to rock toward and from the pump-stock B when lever H is operated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the open vertical frame having slotted side members, a central guide slot or opening in its upper end and a central collar or sleeve at its lower end for securing the frame to the upper end of the pump stock or tube, and the pump-rod guided in said collar or sleeve and the upper slot or opening, of the horizontal lever pivoted at its middle to the pump-rod, pivoted at one end within the slot of one side member and extending at its opposite end into the slot of the other side member and there pivoted to the lower end of a vertical link adapted at its upper end to be secured to the lower end of a windmill-rod or other power device, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the open vertical frame having slotted side members, a central guide slot or opening at its upper end, and a central collar or sleeve at its lower end for securing the frame to the upper end of a pump stock or tube, and the vertical pumprod guided in said sleeve and upper slot or opening, of the horizontal lever, pivoted at its middle to the pump-rod and extending at its ends into the slots in the side members of the frame, a stirrup pivoted in one of said side slots and pivoted at its lower end to the adjacent end of the horizontal lever, and the vertical link or rod pivoted at its lower end to the opposite end of said horizontal lever substantially as set forth.
