JOHAN LUDVIG J NSSON OF STOCKHOLM, SVEDEN, ASSIGNOR TO THE AKTIEBOLAGET SEPARATOR, OF SAME PLACE.
AUTOMATIC SPEED-REGULATOR FOR STEAM-TURBINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,425, dated February 1 1, 1896.
Application filed November 8, 1895. Serial No. 568,300. (No model.) i
T0 all wir/0m t may con/cern.-
Be it known that I, JOHAN LUnvIG J NssoN, engineer, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Speed-Regulators for Steam-Turbines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. p
This invention has for its object to automatically regulate the speed of the turbine by regulating the size of the supply-port by the speed-revolution of the turbine.
It consists, broadly considered, in supporting the turbine upon the shaft or connecting it therewith so that it may have a lateral movement and in one of its extreme positions leave the supply-port full open and in the other extreme position closed entirely, the turbine being held normally in the iirst-mentioned position, and providing devices which, under the action of centrifugal force in the rotation of the turbine proportionate to the speed of revolution, act upon and move the turbine downward. to more or less close the inlet-port.
I will first describe the embodiment of my invention as illustrated `in the accompanying drawings, and then particularly point out the invention in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical section on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. Zis a sectiony on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, with plate I removed. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 2.
A is the shaft of the turbine; B, the casing; C, the plate or frame holding the buckets or vanes c. This plate has centrally the iange portion D partially cut away, forming the recess d. In this recess is a coil-spring d', one end resting on or secured to the flange portion D at the upper end of recess CZ and the other end on or secured to a collar E, secured to shaft A. The flange portion D has a slot cl3, through which a pin d2, secured to the shaft A, passes. The bucket or vane frame O has at its outer end the up wardly-extending flange F, of extent equal to the inlet-port G. The inner surface of the casingB is formed eccentric with the frame O, so that at one portion, contiguous to the inlet-port, the flange F above the bucket and flange f below the bucket fit snugly against the said surface, while at that portion contiguous to the outlet-port H a space is left between these parts, the first condition being to prevent the escape of steam or other gas or vapor in entering the bucket at the inlet-port and the other to allow it to readily discharge at the outlet-port.
I is a plate secured to the shaft by pin d2,
the frame or plate C being at its inn er or central. .portion out away, as at c2, and the plate I so formed at one or more points by depending iianges t as to form between it and the frame O a pocket i2, decreasing in height from the shaft outward and with an inclination toward the shaft. In these pockets, of which there may be any number, six being shown, are placed balls or spheres J.
From the foregoing description it will bc clearly seen that the frame C is capable of a vertical movement of limited extent upon the shaft A, and is held normally in the position shown in Fig. 1 by the spring d'.
When the turbineis revolved, the centrifugal force tends to throw the balls J outward, and when the speed is sufficient to overcome the weight of the balls they commence to move outward, and, the plate I being fixed `and the pocket 712 of decreasing height outward, the balls force the turbine downward upon the shaft A, the extent of outward movement of the spheres J being dependent upon the speed of revolution of the turbine. Thus the downward movement of the turbine is dependent upon its speed of rotation.
Initially and when the turbine is at rest the to-p of the inlet-port coincides with the bottom of flange F. In the revolution of the turbine, when, as described, the turbine moves downward, the ilange F covers the inlet-port by an amount dependent upon the extent of its drop, and thus dependent upon its speed of rotation, until finally, when it has moved downward its utmost, the port is entirely closed. This downward movement is against the spring d', and therefore whenever the IOO speed falls and the ball moves inward the spring moves the turbine on the shaft in a reverse direction, again opening the port.
This device is adapted to a turbine driven by any means, whether steam, water, air, or any other power.
I do not intend to limit myself to the specific embodiment of my invention illustrated by the accompanying drawings and hereinbefore described, except as the same may be specifically claimed.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protectby Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with a turbine Wheel, a shaft upon which said wheel is secured so as to have a rotary movement and a movement along said shaft, an inlet-port for said turbine, and means thrown into action by the rotation of said turbine and adapted when rendered active to move said turbine along said shaft an extent dependent upon the speed of rotation of the turbine, the turbine being adapted in its movement in one direction upon said shaft to close said inlet-port, and in the other direction to open it.
