To d/Z/Z whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, EMMET STo CKTON DIL- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peel Tree, in the county of Barbour and State of \Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in EX- tension-Tables; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to tables, and more particularly to that class of tables known as extension-tables.
The object 01' the invention is to provide a table which shall be of such construction that when not in use it may be adjustedinto small compass, so as to occupy but little space.
With this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an improved table, show- 'top a, the sides a, and the legs o ing it extended to its full length. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it contracted or adjusted to occupy small space. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4: is a longitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line 00 as, Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A, B, and O denote the three sections of which my table is composed, although it is evident that more or less sec tions may be employed if desired.

Guide-ribs b are secured to the inner sides of these side pieces I), while slots 12 are formed in the side pieces I) similar to those formed in the side pieces a of the section A.
The section 0 of the table is composed of the top 0, side pieces 0, and the two legs 0 The outer sides of these side pieces c are formed with grooves 0 which correspond with and engage the guide-ribs b of the section B, while the top c is adapted to slide in the slots b of the sectionB. The meeting edges of the tops of the several sections are provided with the usual and well -.known dowel-pins and sockets, which-Ihave shown at 1 in dotted lines.
As shown inFig. 1, it will be noticed that the tops of the several sections of the table overlap one another and consequently occupy different planes. Obviously when extended the tops of the several sections should be in the same plane, so as to make a smooth and uninterrupted surface.
My invention contemplates the automatic raising of the tops I) and 0 when the table is extended its full length.
2 denotes brackets which are secured to the rear legs of the section A of the table, and are provided with holes through which passes a plunger 2, having a head 3 which is adapted to engage the lower edge of the side piece I) of the section B of the table, and when this section is drawn out from underneath the top a the plunger will, by means of its interposed coil-spring 4, force the rear end of the section upward in the same plane with the top a.
The legs of the section B are hollow. (Jasters 5 have their shanks 6 located in said legs, and a coil-spring 7 is arranged between the flange 8 011 the shank and a stud 9 in the tableleg and exerts its energy to depress the casters, so that when the section B has been moved out to its extended position these springs will act jointly with the springs of the plunger to raise the section B of the table upward and bring its top in the same plane with the top a of the section A, it being understood that the guide-ribs do not extend the full length of the side pieces of the sections.
The section B of the table is provided with similar spring-actuated plungers, and the section 0 is provided with similar spring-actuated casters, and a further description thereof is not thought to be necessary, as I have designated these parts by the same reference letters and numerals. By reason of the top 19 sliding into the slots of the side pieces of the section A it is evident that the top Z1 may be of the same width as the top a; but as the top 0 of the section 0 of the table is beneath the top I) it is evident that the last-named top must pass between the rear stationary legs of the section B. Hence the breadth of the top must necessarily be reduced to allow of this movement. In order to make the top of uniform breadth throughout when the table is extended at full length Ihave hinged to the top 0 of the section 0 shelves or extensions 0 which are folded up upon the top 0 when the table is adjusted to occupy but a small space, and which when the table is eX- tended may be swung out and will form a continuation of the edges of the tops a and b of the sections A and B of the table.
Hooks and staples 10 may be secured at any suitable points to the different sections, so as to secure the sections together when extended and prevent them accidentally becoming separated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An extension-table composed of two or more sections, the tops of which are adapted to overlap one another when the table is occupying small compass, brackets secured to the rear legs of one section, spring-actuated Vertically-movable plungers passing through said brackets and adapted to engage at their upper ends with a depending piece on the adjacent section, all as specified.
2. An extension-table, consisting of two or more sections, one of said sections having a sliding engagement with the other section, whereby its top may he slid under the top of the other section and provided with legs having spring-actuated casters and plungers, whereby, when it is extended, its top will be flush with the top of the other section, substantially as set forth.
3. An extension-table composed of sections A, B and (J, the top of the section B adapted to slide under the top of the section A, and the top of the section 0 adapted to slide under the top of the section B, said sections B and 0 having legs provided with vertical, movable, spring-actuated casters, and springactuated plungers secured to the section A to operate against the section B and similar plungers secured to the section B to operate against the section 0, whereby when said sections are extended, the tops thereof will be automatically moved into the same plane, substantially as set forth.
