W] TNESSES H NITED STATES ATENT FFicE GEORGIANA R. IIILLI-IOUSE, .OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BICYCLE-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,222, dated February 4, 1896.
Application filed ll'ovem'ber 18, 1895. serial No- 569,257. (No model) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGIANA R. HILL- HOUSE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of bicyclelocking devices which are incorporated in the frame of the machine, and my invention has for its object to afford rigid support for the lock-bolt and to avoid injurious strains on the frame; and my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, hereinafter pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the crankshaft hanger and a portion. of the rear lower brace, center brace, and lower main brace of the frame, together with the sprocket-wheel and the lock. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the lock, taken on the line 00 .r, Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a crosssection of the look at g] y, Fi 2.
A represents the crank-shaft hanger, B the front sprocket-wheel, and C the rear lower brace. The lock D is mounted permanently between the members of the rear fork O, forming a brace in the usual position, which is occupied by the cross-brace. The bolt 2 is movable longitudinally in the case of the lock d, being guided by the longitudinal slot 3, which receives a guiding-pin 4.
Fig. 2 shows a portion of the sprocket-wheel B in section, and the bolt-is shown thrown out so as to engage and intercept a spoke 5.
6 represents a cylinder-lock which is rotary, being guided in a fixed plane of rotation by means of apin 7, which engages in a circumferential groove 8. The pin 9, which is fixed in the sliding-bolt 2, engages in a spiral groove 10 in the shank 11 of the cylinder 6, whereby the rotation of said cylinder shall. cause the reciprocation of the bolt 2.
The series of tumblers 13 14 15 will engage with and lock the cylinder 6, at the position of parts shown in Fig. 2, when the key is withdrawn, thus securing the bolt 2 in its outward position. WVhen the key 16 is inserted, as shown, the cylinder can be rotated to the right, withdrawing the bolt 2 longitudinally, by means of the spiral groove 10 acting on the pin 9. \Vhen the bolt has been sufficiently withdrawn, the spring-catch 17 will enter the notch 18 in a bolt, retaining it in its retracted position. The key is then withdrawn. The spring-catch 17 is provided with a thumb-piece 19, whereby it may be released in order to release the bolt 2 and lock the bicycle after dismounting. In order to throw the bolt out a spring 20 is provided.
The spring 20 and the spring-catch 17 may be omitted.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a rear-driven cycle, the combination with a frame having a crank shaft hanger and a rear lower brace composed of two members extending rearward from the hanger at opposite sides of the traction-wheel, of a lock-case extending transversely and supported at two points in its length by said members, a longitudinally-movable lock-bolt guided in the length of said case to engage beyond and externally to said points of support with a wheel of the propelling mechanism mounted on the crank-shaft and suitable means for actuating and locking said bolt.
2. In a rear-driven cycle, the combination with a frame having a crank-shaft hanger and a rear lower brace composed of two members extending rearward from the hanger at opposite sides of the traction-wheel, of a lock-case extending transversely and supported at two points in its length by said members, a throat formation of the case extending between and permanently attached to said members, a longitudinally-movable lock-bolt guided in the length of said case to engage beyond and externally to said points .of support with a wheel of the propelling mechanism mounted on the crank-shaft, and suitable means for actuating and locking said bolt.
3. In a rear-driven cycle, the combination with a frame having a crank-shaft hanger and a rear lower brace composed of two members extending rearward from the hanger at opposite sides of the traction-wheel, of a lock-case extending transversely and supported at two points in its length by said members, a longitudinally-movable lock-bolt guided in the length of said case to engage beyond and externally to said points of support with a wheel of the propelling mechanism mounted on the crank-shaft, and a key-cylinder for actuating and locking said bolt rotative upon the axial line of said bolt at the end of the case opposite thereto.
4. In a rear-driven cycle, the combination with aframe having a crank-shaft hanger and a rear lower brace composed of two members extending rearward from the hanger at opposite sides of the traction-wheel, of a lock-case extending transversely and supported at two points in its length by said members, a throat formation of the case extending between said members, a longitudinally-1novable lock-bolt guided in the length of said case to engage beyond and externally to said points of support with a Wheel of the propelling mechanism mounted on the crank-shaft, and a keyreceiving cylinder for actuating and locking said bolt having pin-tumblers, and ducts for the pin-tumblers located in said throat, and suitable means for actuating and locking said bolt.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 2d day of November, A. D. 1895.
