ELECTRICAL IGNITING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,960, dated February 4, 1898.
Application filed September 6,1895- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILHELM KAISER, imperial royal commissioner of the policy, a subsiding at Vienna, Floridsdorf, Austria-Hungary, have invented a new and useful Electric Momentaneous Light Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its general object to provide an electrical igniting device through the medium of which candles, lamps, and the like may be quickly and easily lighted; and with this end in view the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the top of the box or casing removed, and Fig. 4 is a plan View of the device complete.
In the present embodiment of my invention I have illustrated a candle as the light-affording medium, which is preferable because it permits of the device being readily kept clean; but I would have it understood that other light-giving devices, such as lamps, may be employed if desired.
In the drawings similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views, referring to which a indicates a box or casing, which has a lower compartment, a, and an upper compartment, a for a purpose presently described, and which forms the base of my improved device.
H indicates two parallel guide-plates which are arranged upon'the top of the casing a and have their contiguous edges undercut, as illustrated.
j indicates a stop at one end of the guides I-l, andlcindicates a slide-plate, which has its edges beveled, as shown, to engage the guides H, and is provided with a knob i, by which it may be conveniently moved to and fro between said guides I-l. Attached to and rising from this slide is a tube 9, which contains a coiled spring g, and is provided at its upper end with diametrically-opposite studs 71 for the engagement of the bayonet-slots h of the detachable cap h, which is preferably Serial No. 561,631. (No model.)
provided with a marginal flange and with a central aperture, as shown.
The candle G is placed in the tube 9 upon the coiled spring g, which tends to press it up against the cap 72- as it burns away, and its wick h extends up through the aperture in said cap, as better shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that it can be readily lighted.
f indicates hollow posts which rise from the casing-base a on opposite sides of the tube g, and F F indicate suitable points, preferably of platinum, which have their contiguous ends arranged close together in the path of the candle-wick and are designed to be electrically connected with a suitable electric generator, so that when a circuit is completed through them a spark will be formed between their contiguous ends sufficient to light the wick of a candle or lamp.
By reason of the construction thus far described it will be seen that when a circuit is completed through the points F F to form a spark between their contiguous ends and the slide 76 is moved against the stop j the wick of the candle will rest between the points F F, and will be lighted by the electric spark. The slide it may then be moved so as to carry the lighted candle away from the platinum points and prevent the flame from injuring said points.
In the compartment a of the box or casing a there is arranged a small battery A (preferably a dry battery) of cells b, whose contact-wires c c conduct the primary current for a Ruhmkorff apparatus B, of the wellknown construction. Switched into the primary circuit by the wires d d in the ordinary manner illustrated or in any approved known manner is a condenser O, which condenser is I arranged in the lower compartment, 6!, of the box or casing A, as illustrated. The interruption of the circuit is produced in the ordinary manner by an armature-hammer mechanism D. The hammer (Z however, is peculiar in that it is carried by a spring 01 as short as possible, but weak so that its play will be very slight. This construction which forms a portion of the novelty of my device has for its purpose to effect the highest possible number of oscillations with the least noise, in order to increase the development of heat of the plurality of sparks to light a large wick.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In an electric igniting device, the combination of a base, points F, F, supported above the base, means for creating a spark between the contiguous ends of the points, guides arranged at the upper side of the base, a slide arranged between the guides, a light-giving device carried by the slide and adapted to be lighted by the spark between the points F, F, and a stop j, adapted to stop the slide when the light-giving device is in a position to be lighted by the spark between points F, F,

In an electric igniting device, the com- 1 bination of a base, posts rising from the base, points F, F, carried by the posts, means for creating a spark between the contiguous ends of the points, the parallel guides H, arranged upon the base between the posts, and having their inner edges undercut, the stop j, at one end of the guides, the slide K, arranged between the guides and having a knob or handle 71, the tube connected to and rising from the slide and having a detachable cap provided with an aperture, a coiled spring arranged within the tube, and a candle also arranged in the tube and interposed between the spring and cap and having its wick extended through the aperture in the cap, substantially as specified.
3. I11 an electric igniting device, the combination of a base, posts rising from the base, points F, F, carried by the posts, means for creating a spark between the contiguous ends of the points, parallel guides arranged upon the base between the posts, a stopj, at one end of the guides and the slide arranged between the guides and carrying a candle, lamp, or other device adapted to be ignited by the electric spark created between the points, substantially as specified.
