ROAD-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,881, dated February 4, 1896.

To all whom 2125 may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY M. WEAVER, a resident of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road- Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in road-scrapers, the object being to construct the machine in such manner that a large space will be afforded for the discharge of the contents of the scoop.
A further object is to provide simple and efficient means for raising the scoop when filled with material.
Afurther object is to provide means whereby the scoop-raising mechanism will be automatically thrown out of gear when the scoop shall have been sufficiently raised.
A further object is to construct the scoopraising devices in such manner that the forward end of the scoop will be raised higher than the rear end, whereby to prevent the escape of the material contained in said scoop.
A further object is to produce a road-scraper which shall be simple in construction and effectual in the performance of its functions. 7
\Vith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views.
A represents the frame of the machine, to which the axle B is secured, said axle being preferably bent downwardly at its ends and provided at the ends of said downwardly-extending portions with suitable skeins, upon which the carrying-wheels G are mounted. A beam 0 extends rearwardly from the frame of the machine and at its free end is provided with a caster-wheel 0 whereby the rear end of the machine will be supported.
The hub a of one of the wheels 0 has secured to it a gear-wheel D, which meshes with a gear-wheel D loosely mounted on a shaft E carried by the frame of the machine. A
clutch-sleeve Z) of a clutch E is mounted loosely on the shaft E and adapted to rotate with the gear-wheel D. The other clutchsleeve b of said clutch is mounted on the shaft and adapted to rotate therewith but have a sliding movement thereon, so that it may be moved into engagement with the clutch-sleeve b by means of a lever 0.
Instead of providing the mechanism above described at one side of the machine it is evident that it may be provided at both sides, although it will be found in practice that one set of such devices will suffice.
Secured on the shaft E, in proximity to each side of the machine, are drums F on which ropes or chains F are adapted to be wound, said ropes or chains extending forwardly from the drums F, and, after passing over pulleys d at the forward end of the machine, are made to extend downwardly, and at their lower ends are secured to the forward end of a scraper G. Other ropes or chains F are adapted to be wound 011 the shaft E in proximity to the drums F, said chains F being extended rearwardly, and, after passing over pulleys d at the rear end of the machine, are secured to the rear end of the scraper or scoop G.
From this construction and arrangement of parts it will be seen that when the lever c is operated to throw the clutch-sleeves b 1) into mesh the shaft E will be made to revolve and the ropes or chains F F will be wound on the drums F and the shaft E respectively, and thus raise the scraper or scoop G. As the drums F on which the chains F are wound are of greater diameter than the shaft E on which the chains F are wound it is evident that the chains F will be wound on the drums F faster than the winding of the chains F on the shaft E, and therefore the forward end of the scraper or scoop, to which the chains F are attached, will be raised faster and higher than the rear end, thus preventing the escape of the contents of the scraper or scoop. IVith the scoop or scraper and its load thus elevated the machine can be taken to the place where it is desired to deposit the load, where the latter will be released or discharged in a manner presently explain ed. In order to automatically release the clutch E when the scoop has been sufficiently raised the devices now to be described will be employed.
A bar H is connected at or near one end to the scraper or scroop G by means of a bolt e and provided with an elongated opening or yoke 11, through which the clutch E extends. The clutch-sleeves Z) Z) are provided, respectively, with collars ff and the bar If is provided with inclined enlargements which, when the scraper shall have been raised sufficiently, will enter between said collars ff, and thus force the clutch-sleeves apart and stop the rotation of the shaft E.
111 order to prevent the retrograde rotation of the shaft E while the load is being conveyed to the place of deposit, the devices shown in Figs. 1 and 2 will be employed. A ratchet-wheel i is secured to the shaft E at a point between its ends and is engaged by a dog or pawl 2 carried by a lever i one end of said lever being pivotally connected to a standard or standards i secured to the frame of the machine. By this means the retrograde rotation of the shaft E will be prevented when the scoop or scraper is elevated, and after the load shall have been discharged the lever i will be raised to release the dog 2' from the ratchet-wheel 2T, whereupon the scraper or scoop G will be permitted to lower by its own gravity.
In order to provide a large opening for the escape of the material from the scoop or scraper G, I prefer to make the bottom thereof in two (or more) hinged sectionsjj, said bottom extending from one end of the scoop or scraper to the Other, with the exception of a narrow cutting edge or platej at the forward end. Each section jj of the bottom of the scoop or scraper is pivotallyconnected at its center to the sides of the same. To the journal of the section j an arm 7; is secured and projects upwardly, and to the journal of the section j an upwardly-projecting arm is secured, said arm 71; being extended up above the scoop or scraper to produce an operating-leverk The arms 76 7e are connected by a rod or pitman 711 as shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
A block or stop Z having an inclined face Z is secured to one side of the scoop or scraper G to lock the lever 70 in position to prevent the turning of the sectionsjj of the bottom of the scoop or scraper while the latter is being filled, said lever being retained in engagement with the stop by means of a spring Z the inclined face of the stop serving to properly guide the lever in position to engage said stop.
Now it will be seen that when it is desired to discharge the load it is simply necessary to release the lever W from the stop Z and operate said lever to turn the sections j j of the bottom of the scoop or scraper, whereupon the entire contents of the scoop or scraper will be discharged quickly and effectually.
In order to prevent the turning of the sections jj' of the bottom of the scoop or scraper in the wrong direction, lugs or cars on m are made to project from the sides of the scoop and under the edges of said sections; or, if desired, lugs or pins "a may be made to proj ect from the side of the scoop in position to be engaged by the arms 7; 70, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The draft devices Z are attached to the forward end of the scoop.
The machine constructed and arranged as above described is very simple and effectual in the performance of its functions.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a frame, an axle and wheels carried by said axle, of a gearwheel carried by one of said wheels, a shaft mounted on the frame, a gear-wheel loosely mounted on said shaft and adapted to mesh with the gear-wheel on the wheel, drums carricd by said shaft, a clutch for throwing said shaft into rotative relation to the gear-wheel carried by the shaft, a scoop or scraper, and chains or ropes connected to said scoop or scraper and adapted to be wound on said drums and the shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a wheeled frame and a scoop or scraper, of a shaft carried by the frame, means for operating said shaft, drums carried by said shaft, ropes or chains connected to the forward end of the scoop or scraper and adapted to be wound on said drums, and ropes or chains connected to the rear end of the scraper or scoop and adapted to be wound on the shaft, whereby when the shaft is rotated said scoop or scraper will be raised and its forward end raised higher than its rear end, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a wheeled frame and a scoop or scraper, of a shaft carried by the frame, means for operating said shaft, drums carried by the shaft, ropes or chains connected to the forward end of said scoop or scraper and adapted to be wound on said drums, pulleys carried by the framework for the accommodation of said ropes or chains, intermediate of the drums and scoop or scraper, chains connected to the rear end of said scoop or scraper and adapted to be wound on the shaft and pulleys for the accommodation of said last-mentioned ropes or chains, carried by the framework intermediate between said shaft and the rear end of the scoop or scraper, substantially as set forth.
4. In a road-scraper, the combination with anaxlc, a frame and wheels carried by said axle, of a gear-wheel carried by one of the wheels of the machine, a shaft mounted on the framework, a gear-wheel loosely mounted on said shaft and adapted to mesh with the gear-wheel carried by the wheel of the machine, a scoop or scraper, ropes or chains connecting said scoop or scraper with the shaft, a clutch-sleeve carried by the gearwheel on the shaft, a clutch-sleeve adapted to rotate with and have a sliding movement on said shaft, means for causing said clutchsleeves to engage each other, a collar carried by each clutch-sleeve, a bar secured to the scoop or scraper and having an elongated opening through which said clutch passes, and an enlargement on said bar adapted to enter between the collars on the clutch-sleeves and release the clutch, when the scoop is raised snfliciently, substantially as set forth.
