UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TARGE G. HANDT, OF STOUGHTON, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN A. JOHNSON, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
WHlFFLETREE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 553,863, dated February 4, 1896.
Application filed M h 9, 1895- others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to ferrules and hooks for whiffletrees, and its object is to provide an improved construction of the ferrule with which the hook is connected, whereby it may be firmly secured to the whiffletree and prevented from turning thereon.
The ordinary method. of attaching ferrules to whiflietrees is either to simply drive the same thereupon, relying upon frictional contact to hold them in place, or by passing a rivet diametrically through the ferrule and the Wood of the whiffletree. Both of these methods are objectionable, the first because the ferrule is not securely held in place, and the second because the rivet is liable to split the wood and weaken the whiffletree.
My invention is designed to obviate the above and other objections; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a whiffletree ferrule and hook'constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same secured to the end of a whiflietree. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, showing it detached from the whiffletree.
Serial No. 541,168. (No model.)
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a whiflietree of any ordinary or suitable construction, and 2 the ferrule consisting of an annular band 3, formed with a shank 4, and a crescent-shaped hook 5, as seen in Fig. 1. In Fig. 2 an eye 6 is substituted for the hook 5. The inner end of the ferrule 3 is formed with aselnicircular flange 7, provided at its ends with prongs 8, which are driven into the whiifletree when the ferrule is placed on the end thereof. By this construction the prongs bite into the wood of which the whiffletree is composed, thereby preventing the ferrule from rotating or turning thereon, and also securely holding it in place.
The ferrule and hook can be economically manufactured; it can be easily and readily applied to the whiffletree and the prongs clinched into the wood, and when in place there is no liability of its turning or working loose on the whiffletree.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with a whiffletree, of the ferrule comprising the annular band, the semicircular flange formed integral therewith at the inner end, the prongs formed by slitting the ends of said flange, separating them from the band and bending them inwardly in a plane parallel with the axis of the whiflietree and driving them into the whiffletree, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TARGE G. MANDT.
