Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANA O. HASKELL, OF NORTH EAST, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR. OF ONE- HALF TO ALFRED SHORT, OF SAME PLACE.
THlLL-COUPLING..
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 665,006, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed May 24, 1900. Serial No. 17,865. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANA O. HASKELL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at North East, in the'county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Oouplings,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to thill-couplings, but more particularly to an antirattler therefor, and has for its object to provide an improved securing means for the spring or antirattler, whereby the same can readily and quickly be removed from and attached to the thill-iron.
With this object in view the invention consists in the peculiar combinations and novel constructions of parts, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a thill-coupling constructed in accordance with myinvention and to which the antirattler is attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of the same; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view of one of the soon ring-nuts and the detachable end of the spring, illustrating the manner of attaching the spring in engagement with the washer.
Referring now to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 designates the clip on the threaded shanks 2 and 3, on which is positioned the clip-bar 4 and held in place by the nuts 5 and 6.
6 and 7 are the ears of the thill-iron,which pivotally carry the thill-iron 8, which is attached thereto by a coupling-pin 9. This coupling-pin is provided with parallel limb 10,suspended therefrom on a lower plane and which extends below the ears of the clip and the head of the thill-iron and is connected to said pin by a vertical bar 11 at one end.
The antirattler 12 comprises a strip of tempered steel and is approximately U-shaped, although one limb thereof projects beyond the other and terminates in a semicircular extension 12 and is designed to embrace the rear side of the head of the thill-iron to deaden the sound caused by the vibration of the thill and the upper face of the nut 5,
during the motion of the vehicle to which it is attached. This spring is fulcrumed to the suspended limb of the coupling-pin bya semicircular plate 13, having a flange 14, which is riveted to the spring so that the semicircular portion of the plate will embrace the limb 10 and normally hold the parts together, a head 15 on the free end of the said limb preventing the spring and coupling-pin from becoming detached. The shorter limb 16 of the spring is carried up to a point opposite the threaded shank 2, and its free end is then bent at right angles thereto to form a slotted extension 16 adapted to engage the tongue 17 of a square washer 17 threaded on the shank 2 and positioned between the lower face so that when the clip is secured upon the axle of the vehicle and the nut 5 is tightened the limb 16 will be securely held against the bar 4; but said extension 16 may be sprung out of engagement with the tongue 17 by simply forcing the limb 16 toward the nut 6.
In actual practice the spring andcouplingpin will probably be put upon the market separate and independent of the thill-coupling, as it is applicable to many different forms of couplings and might be applied to any one of many forms now in use. I therefore would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the use of this device to the construction of coupling shown, but hold that many de partures might be made from the structure illustrated without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described,
of the banglethe combination With a clip and a thill-iron' adapted to be connected thereto, of a coupling-pin connecting the two and having a suspended limb connected to one end thereof, an
antirattler-spring carried by the suspended limb of the coupling-pin, one end of which is designed to bear against the head of the thilliron, and an extension on the other end of the spring adapted to lie flush against the securing-bar of the clip and be secured thereto by a nut on the shank of the clip, but so that it can be Withdrawn Without detaching the nut from the clip.
2. An antirattler for thin-couplings, comprising a coupling-pin, having a parallel limb connected at one end to the pin by a crossbar, an approximately U-shaped spring fulcrnmecl to the said limb one limb of which is longer than the other and terminates in a semicircular extension, and the shorter limb IO being provided with a right-angular slotted extension.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
