clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of this invention is to provide a transformerwherein the magnetic frame may beA separated in solid sections for the purpose of removing, renewing, or repairing the coil or coils, a furtherobj ect being to provide such a construction in which the sections of the frames shall be so shaped as to occasion the least possible interruption or breaks in the lines of force or magnet-ic currents induced therein by the current flowing through the coils.
With this obj ect in view the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be now described and pointed out particularly in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a magnetic frame for transformers or inductoriums,show ing the configuration, but without showing the lamina,the lines of division between which would tend to confuse the eye. Fig. 2 is an vend elevation showing the coils in place. Fig.
3 is a plan view showing the plates and a diagrammatic representation of the coils. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail elevations of oppositely-arranged plates. Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view showing the contour of the engaging-surfaces of the central projections.
Like letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that the body of my transformer is built up, as is usually the case, of a series of super posed plates, and the coils are adapted to pass through apertures formed in the whole series of plates, so as to inclose-within them a sec tion or sections of all of the plates, while other portions of the plates in turn surround the coil. Now, with a transformer of this con struction I propose to connect the plates together by bolts into two solid sections, the
division-line between which sections shall be so arranged as to permit of the sections being separated when desired, so as to allow of the removal or repair of the coil, and at the same time to so construct the connecting portions that there will be little or no difliculties encountered through the interruption or interference with the magnetic lines of force induced in the frames by the current flowing through the coils. To accomplish this the plates of both sections are provided with fingers or projections, each of which is of sufficient length to pass entirely through the coils, and the iingers or projections on the said sections are arranged to abut instead of being lapped, as has heretofore been usually done in ind uctoriums of this general character.
The letter A indicates a plate or series of plates for one side of the inductorium having bolt-holes a, through which bolts may be passed to unite the plates in a solid section, each of the plates A being provided with arms B having their inner edges dared outwardly so as to receive between them inwardly-inclined edges of arms D on the opposite or cooperating plates F. The plates F are also united into a solid section, and when t-he two sections are brought together in the positions indicated in Figs. l and 2 the arms fit within each other, as just stated, and by using` moderate force they are caused to wedge tightly together, forming, for all practical purposes, complete plates or frames. The central arms G are fitted within the coils and are of substantially the same shape on both plates; but reversely arranged-that i3 to say, togethern they form a rectangular connecting portion between the sides.
In order to insure a contact between the central arms regardless of the particular point where the wedging-surfaces bind, the said central arms are provided with bearing surfaces at M, with relation to which the wedging-surfaces are arranged at an equal inclination, as will be readily understood from Fig. G. These bearing-surfaces M slide upon each other as the sections are brought together and insure a magnetic Contact under all conditions.
To facilitate the entry of the central arms they are provided with reduced ends, preferably struck on a circle, as shown, each arm IOO thus having a wide base and tapering body, which, when the sections are properly seated together, insures a contact between 'the central arms throughout the length, making, for all practical purposes, complete plates with openings through the whole body for the passage of the coil ll, but at the same time, when so desired, the two sections may be readily separated i'or the purposes before mentioned.
The plates being abutted there is no necessity for leavingI openings between adjacent plates, as is necessary where the arms are lapped one upon the other, as in prior constructions.
The invention herein described and claimed is subordinate to the invention shown, described, and claimed in my pending applica tions, Serial No. 271,981, Afiled April 25, 1888, and Serial No. 371,527, filed November '15, 1890, as a division of said earlier application of 1888.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isl. r1`he herein-described co-operating inductorium-plates having oppositely-extending arms, the arms on one plate having their inner edgesinclined and the arms on the opposite plate having their outer edges inclined, whereby when the two are brought together the inclined surfaces co-operate and wedge together without lateral displacement o1 either plate with relation to the other; sub stantially as described.
2. In an inductorium, the combination with the coils, of magnetic frame-plates connected together in solid sections and having oppositely-extending arms, the arms on one section having their inner edges inclined and the arms on the other section having their outer edges inclined, said inclined edges l,
adapted to abut and form a wedgin g connection between the sections without lateral displacement of the sections with relation to each other; substantially as described.
3. In an inductorium, the combination with the magnetic frame-plates having the arms at opposite extremes with their inner edges inclined and the intermediate arm with one straight edge and one edge forming a bearing arranged at equal angle to both inclines, ol' the co-operating plates having the arms with their outer edges inclined and the intermediate arms with one straight edge torni ing a bearing arranged at equal angles to both in elines, the inclined edges of said arms being adapted to co-operate and abut to form wedging connections, and said arms being of sulli cient length to bridge the space between the bodies of the plates; snbstantiall y as dcscribed.
