SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,830, dated February 4, 1896.

Be it known that I, MCLEAN BOLTON, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a toy figure representing a person in the act of shooting an arrow from a bow, or a dart or other missile from a gun.
The main object ofmy invention is to raise the arm of the figure carrying the bow or gun when placing the projecting device under tension and to so arrange the arm that it will drop when the arrow, dart, or other missile is shot forward; and my invention consists in the novel devices and combination of devices hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figures 1 and 2 are a front and rear elevation, respectively, of a figure representing an Indian in theact of shooting an arrow. Figs. 3 and 4 are a front and rear elevation, respectively, of a figure representing a hunter, for instance, in the act of firing a gun; and Fig. 5, a top view of the gun.-

C is the movable arm of the figure, pivoted at c to the body and carrying an arrow or gun D, which is secured to or formed integral with the arm C.

although the bow itself might be made of spring metal or other suitable material to give the desired force to shoot the arrow. I prefer, however, to have the string cl elastic. The bow-string is placed under tension by drawing down on the cord e, which passes over a rigid block j' secured to the body of.

E represents the arrow, and d a hook for supportin git. The tail ofthe arrow is notched and placed against the bow-string d at the point where the cord c is attached to it. To
shoot the arrow, the ring c is disengaged from the catch g, whereupon the bow-string d throws the arrow forward. In placing the bow-string under tension by drawing down on the cord e the arm of the figure is raised and held in the position indicated by placing the ring e on the catch g, and when the ring is released and the arrow shot forward the arm drops by gravity to the side of the gure, as will be readily understood.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the dart or other missile is placed on the upperside of the gun, which is preferably grooved, and against the fork h, each prong of which is secured to an elastic or other tension device d secured at any desirable point on the sides of the gun or eX- tending to the end of the gun-barrel, as indicated in the drawings. The tension device d is placed under tension by drawing down on the cord e, which is secured to the fork h, and in placing the same under tension the arm of the figure is raised, as above explained. In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown the cord e passing over the butt of the gun-stock and through an eye f', instead of passing it over a block, as in Figs. land 2. On releasing the ring e from the catch g the fork h is pulled forward by the tension device d and the dart or missile is shot from the gun, and at the same time the arm of the iigure carrying the gun drops to the side of the iigure. A pin passes through the gun-barrel and under which passes the elastic d. This pin serves to prevent Vthe fork h becoming displaced when the dart or other missile is shot forward.

In a toy of the character described, a hinged or pivoted arm carrying a bow, gun or similar device, adapted to be raised to a firing position by the act of placing the proj ecting device under tension, and adapted to drop to the side of the igure upon dischargd ing the projectile, substantially as set forth.
