RUNNER FOR BABY-CARRIAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,822, dated February 4, 1896.

This invention relates to baby-carriages, and the object thereof is to provide means for converting such carriages into sleighs or sleds; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a baby-carriage provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a plan View of the attachment which I employ; Fig. 3, a sectionon the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a section on the line A 4:, the rim of the wheel in each case being omitted.
In the practice of my invention I employa runner-bar A, which is curved upwardly at the rear end, as shown at B, and at the front, as shown at C, the front curve being carried 1 farther and being also slightly laterally front wheel.
curved, as shown in Fig. 2. I connect this runner-bar with the wheel of an ordinary baby-carriage, as shown in Fig. 1, in such manner as to lock the wheels, and also so as to form a sleigh, the wheels being supported by the runner-bar.
The runner-bar is preferably round in crosssection, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the means for connecting it with the carriage consist of yokes D and D and E and E, the first two of which are employed for making connection with the rear wheel and the last two of which for making connection with the These yokes are each formed as shown in Fig. 3, with the exception of the yoke E, and they consist of a shaft F, which is adapted to be passed through the runner-bar and riveted, as shown in Fig. 3, and the yoke proper with which the shaft is connected, one
side of the yoke being hinged or pivoted at G, and said yoke being provided with a crossbar H, which is pivoted at K, and the free end of which is curved, at shown at L, and adapted to be passed through a slot formed in the continuous side of the yoke, as shown at M, and passing through the cross-bar H is a set-screw or bolt N, which is adapted to form a clamp by means of which the yoke is securely fastened to or caused to clamp the rim of the wheel which passes therethrough, as shown in Fig. 1.
As hereinbefore stated, all the yokes em ployed are of the same construction with the exception of the yoke E, which is employed immediately beneath the forward wheel, and this wheel being of less diameter than the rear wheel I provide means for raising the same and making it level with the rear wheel, which is done by simply extending the shaft F of the yoke, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and as shown in said figure said shaft is also slightly curved to one side, this arrangement being necessary because of the fact that the forward axle of a baby-carriage is usually shorter than the rear one, and for this reason also the runner-bar A is curved at its forward end, as shown in Fig. 2.
Although I have described the yokes as all being of the same construction except the yoke E, it will be seen that the yokes D and D, at the extreme ends of the runner-bar, are connected therewith by being passed around the same, while the yokes E and E are connected with the bar by means of the shaft F, this being rendered necessary by reason of the fact that said yokes D and D are imme diately below thewheels, as shown inFig. 1, and it being necessary that the under surface of the runner-bar at these points should be smooth and unobstructed. It will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and one which may be quicklyand easily applied to any form of baby-carriage.
It is evident that changes in the form, construction and arrangement of the various parts of my improvement may be made without departing from the spirit of my inven tion, or sacrificing its advantages; and I therefore reserve the right to make all such to a Wheel and elevate the Wheel, comprising a yoke, a cross-bar, a set-screw in said crossbar, arranged to secure the clamp on the Wheel and a shaft F, extended beyond the yoke and curved to one side, substantialiyas described.
