To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN MURGATROYD, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Sunshade for Bicycles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved sunshade for attachment to bicycles and other velocipedes, and one which will be capable of varied adjustment to shade the person using the vehicle, notwithstanding the different inclinations of the sun.

Other objects are contemplated, all tending to improve the'construction and general arrangement of the invention, and the full attainment of all will be apparent from the following specification.

To these ends the invention consists in a staff provided with means for connecting it to the frame of a bicycle, and having mounted at its upper end ribs and braces of peculiar construction, whereby the shade is better adapted than those heretofore employed to the work which it is to perform.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference inclicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a bicycle equipped with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a perspeetir e view of the under side of the shade. Fig. 3 is a detail section showing the ribs and braces, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view illustrating the means for securing the staff to the bicycle.

The frame 1 of the bicycle has a clip 2 se cured to its front portion by means of a bolt or similar device, which holds the clip rigidly. The clip 2 has the clip 4 secured thereto as shown, and the latter clip receives the staff 5, which is adjustably held therein by means of a set-screw 4:. The upper end of the staff 5 is internally threaded and receives a correspondingly-threaded projection G of the rod 7, the said rod having directly contiguous to the projection 6 a squared portion 8, on which the runner 9 is adapted to fit, the said runner being provided with a setscrew 10 by which it is held in place. The runner is formed with a square inner portion so as to be received on the square portion 8, and is adapted to be moved along the staff 5 in the operation of folding or extending the shade. The upper end of the rod 7 is formed with a squared portion 11, which is extended into a screi -threaded part 12. Seated on the square portion 11 is a collar 13, to which the ribs 14: are pivotally connected, while the projection 12 carries a cap 15, having an internally-threaded recess receiving the projection. The cap 15 lies snugly upon the collar 13, and is arranged to clamp the cloth 16 of the shade between the collar and the cap, as best shown in Fig. Pivotally connected to the runner 9 are the braces or spreaders 17, one for each of the ribs 14:, and respectively pivoted thereto, so that they may control the ribs in a manner similar to those of an umbrella.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the invention is applicable to any form of velocipede, and indeed to any purpose Where it is desired to shade a person from the sun, and by means of the

2 and 4 the stalf 5 may be adjusted at any inclination desired. It will also be apparent that the peculiar construction of the rod 7 serves to securely and effectively hold the cloth 16 in place and to prevent the same from becoming torn by the operation of the bows and braces. By shortening the forward ribs and correspondingly increasing the length of the rear ribs the shade is formed with a rearward enlargement or extension so that it offers little resistance to the wind and effectively protects the person using the shade.

The staff may be unscrewed from the rod 7 and the devices taken apart with perfect case, which operation may be desirable in folding the shade for transportation.

capable of being held on the remaining squared portion, braces pivotally connected to the runner and to the ribs, the ribs being rearwardly elongated whereby the shade is extended in the same direction and cloth spread on the ribs substantially as described.
