CRUCIBLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,702, dated January 28, 1896. Application filed March '725, 1895. Serial No. 543,103. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concelnf.
Be it known that I, CHARLES CAPPER, a Citizen of the United States, residing at IViL kinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orucibles;
and I do hereby declare the following to be aV full, Clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains'to' make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in crucibles or melting-pots; and it consists in utilizing the old and worn-out pots to form extensions, thereby increasing the capacity of the Crucible, as will be fully described hereinafter.
Such crucibles as are ordinarily constructed and are now in common use cannot be packed with a sufficient quantity of the loose unmelted metal to form a complete charge when melted, as such metal has to be placed in the same in fragments, which occupy a much greater space than the molten metal.
NVhen charging the crucibles it has been the custom to ill the same and pile the metal above the mouth, in order to allow for the decrease in bulk when melted, and, further, to add to the metal from time to time as it sinks until theV Crucible is filled with molten metal.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and eflicient means for increasing the capacity of the Crucibles while the metal is in anunmelted condition; and with this end in View my invention consists in taking the old and worn-out Crucibles and using certain segmental portions of the same to form the extension, thereby decreasing the expense of such attachments.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side sectional elevation of a Crucible having my attachment arranged thereon, which is constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation of an old and worn-out Crucible, showing the lines upon which the same is cut to adapt the same to my invention.
To put my invention into practice I take an old cru cible which has by constant use become thin and frail, and by means of a suitable tool Cut the same into three portions on the lines a a and b b, the portion l between thecuts being utilized and the other portions being discarded. This central portion of the old Crucible, l, is placed over the top of the new Crucible 3, as at Fig. l on the drawings, the internal ring 4 having been previously inserted and arranged inside of the Central portion l, so that it will rest upon the mouth of the new Crucible 3. By thus arranging the parts of the old crucible upon the new an eX- tension is formed, such as shown at Fig. l on the drawings, which will admit of the loose metal being piled some distance above the pot 3, as and for the purpose above described.
Having thus described my invention, what I Claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In Combination with an ordinary Crucible, a segment or section cut from the body of an old and worn out Crucible, resting upon the aforesaid Crucible, a short distance below the upper edge of the latter, and an internal ring suitably formed so as to allow it to rest upon the upper edge of the first named Crucible, thereby forming an extension to the same which may be filled with fragments of the scrap to be melted, the peculiar Construction of the internal ring preventing leakage of the molten metal and causing the metal as it melts to fall by gravity into the Chamber below, thereby greatly augmenting its Capacity.
