Description

(NoModel.) v J. TOTHAM.
COMBINATION SUPPLY AND WASTE FIXTURE FOR WASHBASINS.
No. 558,699. Patented Jan. 28, 1896.
UNITED STATES Y JAMES TOTHAM, OF NEIV IIAVEN, CONNECTICUT,
PATENT OFFICE.o
ASSIGNOR TO TI'IE PECK l BROS. & COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,699, dated January 28, 1896.
Application filed July 22,1895. Serial No. 556,722. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, JAMES TOTHAM, of New Haven, in the county of New I-Iaven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in a Combination Supply and Vaste Fixture for lVashbasins and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection Y with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents a broken view in vertical section of a fixture constructed in accordance with my invention.
My invention relates to an improvement in combination supply and waste fixtures for washbasins, the object being to produce a simple, compact, durable and effective device constructed with particular reference to convenience of assemblance and attention and repair.
lYith these ends in view my invention consists in a combination supply and waste fixture having certain details'of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ a removable cap A, the interior space of which forms a chamber A for the horizontally-arranged valve B, which is adj ustably attached to the outer end of a valve-stein B', t-he inner end of which is vertically perforated to receive a crank-pin C, depending from the outer end of a horizontally-arranged crank C', the inner end of which is secured to the vertically-arranged spindle C2, the extreme upper end whereof is furnished with va horizontal handle C3. The valve B has bearing upon a valve-seat D, formed in the arm D of a fourarmed coupling-head, the hollow center of which is intersected by the passages formed in its respective arms. The depending arm D2 of the said head is threaded for the application of a packing-nut E, which secures to the head the inner end of the tail-pipe E, to the outer end of which the inlet-pipe E2 is attached. The inwardly-extending arm D3 of the head is threaded for the application of a packing-nut F, which contains an expansible packing-ring F, and which secures to the head. the lower end of the adjustable supplyrtube F, the upper end of which is secured by a packing-nut F2, containing an expansible packing-ring F3, to the lower end of a short ver tically-arranged pipe F4, extending through the basinslab G and terminating at its upper end in the ehambered head H of the spout, which is itself not'shown. It will be understood that by loosening the packing-nuts F and F? the pipe F/ may be adjusted as desired, one end moving back and forth in the arm D3 and the other in the tube F4. The upwardly-extending arm Dtof the chambered couplinghead is externally threaded for the application of the lower end of a long stuffingbox I passing upward through the basin-slab G and secured therein by'the nuts I and I2. The spindle C2 before mentioned has bearing in the said stuffing-box and also in the nut I2. The said arm D4 is chambered for the reception' of a sleeve J, the lower end of which impinges upon two packing-washers j j, which rest upon a beveled annular packing-rib c, formed at the lower end of the spindle C2, for the prevention, of the passage of any water out of the chambered coupling-head and upward around the spindle.
It will be understood that the construction above described is duplicated on the other side of the chambered spout-head H, the construction on one side being for hot and the other for cold water.
The chamberedspout I-I before mentioned has mounted in center a vertically-movable waste-pipe K, which may be of any approved construction and does not need particular description or illustration, inasmuch as the part is well known.
It will be readily seenthat by removing the cap A the valve B is exposed for adjustment, renewal or repair, thus making my improved construction very convenient, inasmuch as other part of the fixture. Furthermore, I am enabled by my construction to assemble the whole device before the application and adjustment of the valve, which may then be done to a nicety, whereas in prior constructions of this class it has been necessary to'adjust the valve prior to or during the assemblance ofthe parts. Again, by removing the handle C3 from the spindle C2 and removing -the valves require more attention than any y IOO the nut I2 and the packing-nut F2 the chainbered coupling-head and the parts connected with it may be readily drawn away from the basin. Again, by the coupling provided for the ends of the bent supply-tube Fthe same is self-accommodating in position, so to speak, to the positions assumed by the other parts.
It will be understood that in the use of the device the water enters the iixture through the inlet-pipe i12 and tail-pipe E', and thence through the arm D2 of the ehambered head into the chamber A within the cap A to the valve B, which stops its further progress through the fixture. \Vhen, however, the valve is moved outward into the cap and away from its seat by the manipulation of the handle C3, the water rushes around the valve through its seat and through the central portion of the chambered four-armed head into the adjustable supply-tube F, from which it enters the chambered spout-head II, from which it is delivered into the basin through the spout, which is not shown.
It is apparent that in carrying out my invent-ion some changes in the construction shown and described may be made, and I would have it understood that I do not limit myself thereto, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
IIaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a combination supply-and-iif'aste fixture for wash-basins, the combination with a chambered spout-head mounted in the basinslab, of a stuffing-box also mounted in the basin-slab and depending therefrom, a long spindle extending through the said box, a handle applied to the upper end of the spindle, a four-armed chambered coupling-head having one of its arms connected with the depending end of the stuifing-box by which the said coupling-head is supported below the basin-slab, a supply-tube connection between the said spout-head and one arm of the coupling-head, an inlet-tube connection with another arin of the head, a valve having bearing in the other arm of the head, connection between the said valve and the lower end of the spindle which enters the head through the arm thereof by which it is connected with and supported by the stuffing-box, substantially as set forth.
2. In a combination supply and waste iixture for iif'ash-basins, the combination with a chambered spout-head mounted in the basin slab, of a four-armed ehainbered couplinghead depending from the basin-slab, an adjustable supply-tubehaving slip-joint connection between the said heads, an inlet tube connected with another arm of the head, a valve having bearing in another arm of the head, a removable valve-cap applied tothe arm last mentioned over the valve, and rcmovable for exposing the saine, a spindle passing through the other arm of the head and extending upward through the basinslab, and provided at its upper end with a handle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
