APPARATUS FOR TRANSFERRING PAPER FROM FEEDING-MACHINES T PRINTlNG-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,666, dated January 28, 1896;

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. BRIGGS, of Arlington, in the county of Middlesex, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Transferring Paper from a Feeding-Machine to a Printing-Press, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,is a f ull,clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to the paper-transferring machine shown in my prior application for patent,Serial No.460,743, filed February 2, 1893.
My present invention consists chiefly in novel means for transferring the paper from the feeding-machine onto the fly which passes the paper to the printing-press, as hereinafter fullydescribed and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is aplan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the devices for passing the paper from the feeding-machine to the tapes which transfer the paper onto the fly. Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the clutch mechanism by which intermittent motion is transmitted to the tapes. Fig. 5 is a face View of the clutching side of the pulley, showing its connection with the ratchetwheel. Fig. 6 is a face View of the clutching-roller which operates independent of the aforesaid pulley and imparts a slow initial motion to the tapes while passing the paper to said tapes. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 8 is a detail view of the mechanism for transmitting motion to the fly and to the belt which imparts motion to the tapes.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A represents the impression-cylinder of a printing-press, and B the paper-feeding machine,which latter maybe of any suitable and well-known constructionas, for instance, the machine shown in my Letters Patent No. 480,447, dated August 9, 1892, and not necessary to be here illustrated in detail. The paper-pushin g finger, which is the essential part of said machine required to co-operate with my present invention, is shown in Fig. 3 of these rods are rigidly mounted the pedestals D D, in the bases of which is journaled the shaft F of the fly F, which shaft receives oscillatory motion bya pinion G, attached to the end of the shaft and meshing with a segmental gear G pivoted to the upper portion of the pedestal. A pitman H is connected to the segmental gear adj ustably in its distance from the axis thereof, said pitman receiving a variable reciprocating motion from the cam-disk I, as illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings. All of the aforesaid mechanisms are similar or substantially like those shown in my prior application hereinbefore referred to.
In order to insure harmonious action between the paper-feeding mechanism and impression-cylinder, I drive the cam-disk I from the shaft of the impression-cylinder A preferably by a mitenpinion K on said shaft engaging a corresponding pinion K attached to shaft J, which is mounted at one end in suitable bearings attached to the frame of the press and journaled at the opposite end in a yoke J, which is supported on the shaft 1 of the cam-disk I. A bevel-pinion a attached to the latter end of the shaft J meshes with a bevel-gear a mounted loosely on the shaft IT. From the side of the gear a projects a lug a, which engages an arm a fastened to the shaft I, and thus rotary motion is imparted to the cam-disk I.
To a hub b projecting horizontally from the base of the pedestal D is pivoted a pulley b, which is connected by an endless belt I) with a pulley c mounted loosely on ahorizontal shaft 0 journaled in suitable bearings on the frame of the feeding-machine.
To the shaft 0 is attached the roller R carrying the endless tapes If t, which extend lengthwise of the fly F and run on pulleys t t pivoted to brackets 75 attached to a horizontal shaft T, which is mounted on arms T secured to the pillow-blocks of the impression -eylinder A, as best seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The belt 1/ receives a reciprocating motion by the mechanism hereinafter described, and in order to convert this motion into an intermittent rotary motion in one direction only the side of the pulley c has pivoted to it the pawls (Z d, which engage a ratchet-wheel d fastened to the shaft 0, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
On the roller R ride rollers R mounted on a shaft which is parallel with the shaft 0 and secured to the frame of the feedingmachine. The paper-pushing fingers e of said feedingmachine pass the sheets of paper successively between the rollers R R by which they are carried onto the tapes it, which carry the sheets onto the fly F, the succeeding oscillation of which throws the sheet over onto the feed-table of the printing-press. During this motion of the fly to the printing-press and back to the feeding-machine the tapes t t are held at rest, and as soon as the fly has returned to this last position the paper-puslr ing fingers 6 pass the paper between the rollers R R.
In order to impart to the roller R a slow initial motion for taking the sheet of paper from the feeding-machine, I journal on the shaft 0 or on the hub of the ratchet-wheel d a clutching-collarf, to which is pivoted a dog f engaging the said ratchet-wheel, as shown in Figs. (3 and 7 of the drawings. Said collar operates independent of the clutching devices of the pulley c and receives motion from a bell-crank lever g pivoted to the frame of the feeding-machine and connected at one end to an ear 6 on the collar f by a strap f. The opposite end of said lever is connected by a pitman 7L to an arm 71, on the lever O, which is pivoted to the frame and receives oscillatory motion from a roller pivoted to the cam-disk I and traveling in a longitudinal groove in the said lover.
The belt 7) is attached to a slide .3, mounted on the guide-rod C, which slide receives a re ciprocating motion from the rock-arm L by means of the pitman L connecting said slide to an arm L, attached to a short shaft journaled on the end of the rock-arm L and receiving oscillatory motion by a pinion on said shaft meshing with a pinion on a shaft z' extending lengthwise of the rock-arm and journaled thereon, the inner end of the shaft i having attached to it another pinion j, engaging a stationary gear 7' on the frame of the feeding-machine, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The rock-arm receives its motion from the lever O, to the free end of which it is pivota-lly connected.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a pap er-feeding machine and feed-table of a printing press, a fly transferring the paper to said feed-table, a guide extending from the press to the feeding machine, a reciprocating slide mounted on said guide, a roller at one end of the fly and parallel with the fly-shaft, tapes carried on said roller and extending lengthwise of the fly, a pulley mounted loosely on the shaft of said roller, clutch connections between said pulley and roller and adapted to engage and release the same, apulley at the opposite end of the fly, and a driving belt running on said pulleys and attached tothe aforesaid slide, as set forth.
2. In combination with the paper-feeding machine and feed-table of a printing press, a fly transferring the paper to said feed-table, a guide extending from the press to the feeding machine, a slide mounted on said guide, a tape-carrying roller mounted on the frame of the feeding machine, tape-carrying pulleys at the opposite end of the fly, tapes running on said roller and pulleys, a driving pulley mounted loosely on the shaft of the aforesaid roller, clutch connectionsbetween said pulley and roller adapted to engage and release the same, a pulley adjacent to the press, a driving belt running on said pulley and attached to the slide, a revolving disk pivoted to the frame of the feeding machine, a lever receivin g oscillatory motion from said disk, a rock arm actuated by said lever and transmitting motion to the aforesaid slide, a collar mounted loosely on the shaft of the aforesaid papercarrying roller, clutch-connections between said collar and shaft adapted to engage and release the same, and a lever-turning said eollar and actuated by the lever which imparts motion to the aforesaid rock-arm as set forth.
In combination with the fly and paper conveying tapes extending lengthwise of the fly, the roller-shaft -c,pullcy c mounted loosely on said shaft, a traveling-belt driw ing said pulley, pawls l pivoted to said pulley, the ratchet-wheel -(Z fixed to the shaft, the collar -floose on the shaft, the dog fpivoted to said collar, and lever --g connected to the collar to turn the same and impart the initial motion to the roller shaft c-, as set forth.
