T on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS C. REISNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calipers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to calipers in general, and more particularly to those intended for holding balance-wheels of watches or other articles that are carried on pivots or centers in truing and straightening the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this nature which will have a parallel action and which may be provided with a plurality of pairs of interchangeable dies, either of which. may be used without displacing the other.
A further object of the invention is to produce an accurate and simple mechanical action of the parallel jaws and means for delicately adjusting them and clamping them in any desired position.
Referring now to the drawings forming a portion of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3isaperspective view of one of the head-pins employed by me, and Fig. 4 shows the forms of dies employed by me.
In constructing calipers in accordance with my invention I provide a pair of similar bars 5 and 6, having at their extremities jaws 5 5 and 6 6 adapted to receive interchangeable dies 7 and 8, one or both of which may be either male or female. These dies are provided with narrowed stems 7 8, respectively, adapted to enter similar perforations in the jaws. Transversely of each of the bars 5 and 6 is formed a perforation 9 and 10, respectively, through which is passed a carryingrod 11, upon which is imposed a headed bolt 12 held in place thereon by a pin 13. The bolt 12 is passed upwardly between the bars 50 5 and 6 with the upper face of its head impinging the adjacent surfaces of the latter,
its screw-threaded stem 14: projecting above the upper faces thereof. Imposed upon the stem of the nut 12 is awinged disk 15 adapted to turn thereon and having inserted loosely in perforations 16 and 17 therein headed pins 18 and 19, Whose heads enter and are adapted to slide in longitudinal grooves 20 and 21 in the upper surfaces of the bars 5 and 6. To retain the bolt 12 and disk 15 in their proper positions with relation to the bars 5 and 6 a spring-washer 22 is passed over the stem 14 of the bolt and is adapted to exert pressure upon the upper surface of the disk received from the thumb-nut 23 turned upon the screwthreaded portion of the said bolt-stem. Thus it will be seen that as the disk 15 is revolved the pins 18 and 19 are moved to assume positions opposite to those shown, and in so doing draw the bars 5 and 6 and their respective jaws toward each other, causing the dies .to grip any body placed therebetween. When the direction of revolution of the disk 15 is reversed, an opposite result is accomplished. IVhen the proper adjustment has been secured, the nut 23 is turned down upon disk 22 and clamps the elements rigidly.
The bars 5 and 6 are cut away at their inner edges adjacent the rod 11 to receive the enlarged portion 24 of the bolt 12, the heads of the pins 18 and 19,however, being of such length as to bridge the break thus occasioned in the walls of their respective slots.
On each side of the carrying-rod 11 1 prefer to arrange a bar 26 and 27 adapted to slide in perforations in the bars 5 and 6, each of said rods having a surrounding helical spring 28 and 29, respectively, which bear upon the inner edges of the said bars and tend to hold them normally separated.
It will be readily understood that I may make the different parts of my device of any suitable material and that I may vary the specific form and arrangement herein shown without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now described my invention, What I claim is- 1. A device of the class described, comprising a plurality of bars each provided with a groove in its upper surface, a carrier rod entering perforations in the bars and on which the latter are adapted to slide, a disk arranged to bear on the upper surfaces of the bars and provided with pins entering the grooves in the latter, and means for revolving the disk to reciprocate the bars.
2. A device of the class described, CO1l1pIlS' ing a plurality of bars having grooved surfaces, a carrier-rod therefor, a bolt on the carrier-rod provided With a head adapted to impinge the under surfaces of the bars, a disk on the bolt having pins entering the grooves in the bars, means for operating the disk to reciprocate the bars, and means for clamping the bars in fixed relative positions.
