PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. PATRIO, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
CATTLE-PUMP.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 55,356, dated June 5, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. PA'rRrc, ot Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Stock or Cattle Water-Pumping Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference bein g had to the accompan yin gdrawings, making part of this specification, in which the figure is a side elevation of my invention, a section of the front side rail, B, ofthe tilting frame or platform being broken away to show the pivoting-yoke y, which connects the side rails of the platform t'o the pump-pipe p.
The object of this invention is to provide means whereby cattle, horses, Snc., may themselves, and at any time, elevate water to quench their thirst from a well sunk in the field or in the barn-yard.
The invention consists inthe employment of a tilting' platform ,pivoted to a hollow piston or pipe, which is so connected to the pump barrel or cylinder rigidly fixed in the well that the tilting of the platform elevates the water.
`The main frame or base A, which is rectangular, may be placed a little below thc general surface of the ground. The studs E, there being one on each side of' the f'rame, are framed into and supported by the base-frame A. The rails B and B ofthe tilting frame are pivoted to the studs and also to the yoke y of the hollow piston or pipe p. The platform D is suitably hinged to the pivoted section. There is a trough or cistern (indicated by the dotted lines F) fixed to the plank G. All this portion of the tilting platform and the pump piston and plunger is counterbalanced by weights placed upon the plank H.
I prefer the pump here represented, which is that set forth in my application granted November 1, 1865. It consists of a hollow piston, p, with an enlarged plunger, P, and barrel or cylinder O.
J is a sort of pedestal to raise the pump a little from the bottom of the Well. There may be This base J is made small at the bottom, and may be so pivoted to the base-plank I that the latter may adjust itself to the position of the surface of' the bottom of the well, where it is anchored to the wall, and at the same time allow the pump to retain its vertical position. If desired, there may be a brace on one or both sides of the pump, connected to the frame A and to the plank I, or to the sides of section J.
There should be a guard-rail at each side of the tilting platform opposite the end of the trough, so as to guide the animal in approaching the trough to drink to step upon section D, which causes it to settle to the position of the dotted lines D and G. This sinks the plunger P into the trunk or cylinder of the pump and brings up a supply of water in proportion to the capacity of the pump, which, of course, may be varied to suit circumstances.
The pump may be operated from au adjoining field or yard by placing a stud at one side of the tilting frame and hinging a bent lever to it in such a manner that the short arm may be pivoted to the trunnions c of the yoke d, which slides loosely upon the pipe or piston p. The lower end of' the spiral sprin g s rests upon the yoke y, and the upper end is connected to the light end of' the spoutt, the latter being pivoted eccentricall y to the end of the piston p, as shown, so as always to discharge into the trough F, except when temporarily held in the other position by the action of the platform of the other iield or yard. The vertical arm of the bent lever spoken of would be connected, by a rod or otherwise, to atilting platform supporting a trough located in another field. When that platform is tilted by the weight ofthe animal the yoke d is forced down to the tight yoke y, compressing the spring' s, which causes the light end of the spout t to tilt down, and then the platform D is carried down, but the supply of water is discharged into a pipe leading to the trough on the other platform. The troughs should be filled in the first instance by an attendant. By having a jointed tilting frame it is rendered very sensitive to the weight of the animal stepping upon it, and at the same time the ascent to the trough is very slight. The foreign platform would be counterbalauced by weights upon the back side of the vertical arm of the bent lever placed at the well. The foreign platform is not disturbed bythe action of the local one.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and relative arrangement of the base A, or its equivalent, and the jointed tilting frame B D, its fulcrum E, and counterbalancing-weight H with the hollow piston or pipe p of the pump, as and for the purposes set forth.
