SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,457', dated January 21, 1896.
Application led September 9, 1895. Serial No. 561,947. (No model.)

Be it known that I, GRO'VES O. FORBES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homer, in the county of Banks and State of Georgia,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurn-Powers; and I do hereby declare'the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

A represents the platform, preferably a heavy board, on which the framework of the machine and the churn are mounted.
A and A2 represent uprights, the former being provided with a guide-Slat c secured thereto and at a short distance therefrom, between which and the said uprights A' is a guide groove or slot a0. Instead of a slat c a round rod or wire may be used if desired, whereby less friction is occasioned. The opposite upright A2 is provided with guideplates c2, in which slides the guide-rod O, attached by means of the clamp-plate B to the reciprocating cross-piece B, which is secured by means of the clamp E to the handle D of the churn. This cross-piece B is slotted, as at bo, to receive the clamp-screw e, which binds together and at the same time clamps on the said cross-piece the two parts c and c2 of the clamp E. Thus it will be seen that the said clamp may be moved out or in on the said cross-piece, and thus adjustment maybe had for the diameter of the churn, with large churns it being necessary to have the handle farther from the upright A2 than with the small churn.
The handle D is held in the groove e0, made partly in each of the members c and cL of the clamp E. The handle D carries a fly-brush G made of a bent-wire clip g', or a clip ofany suitable resilient material, adapted to slip over and to be held on the said handle, from which clip are suspended a plurality of strings, yarns or papers, forming a depending fringe which plays up and down as the churn rises and falls and thus effectually prevents a settling ofviiies upon either the said handle or upon the top of the churn.
Reciprocating motion is given to the crosspiece B by means of the downwardly-extending arm B2, to which is pivotally connected the rod II, pivoted atA h in one of the holes 700 in the crank K, which is j ournaled at 7o and provided with a counterpoise-arm K; or the connecting-rod II may be pivoted directly to the cross-piece B, and the downwardly-projecting arm B2 may be omitted. This crank K is revolved by the shaft M, which is driven by the sprocket-wheel M and chain N from the driving-wheel P, which is driven by the handcrank p.
It will be seen that the stroke of the churndasher may be varied by moving the pivotpin h out or in on the crank K.
In order to stiften the frame of the machine triangular brace-boards A3 are preferably secured to the uprights A and A2 and to the platform A.
The various advantages of the herein-described construction will readily suggest themselves to any practical mind.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-` 1. In a churn power the combination with J the upright A' provided with a guide slat c', the upright A2 provided with guides c2, the reciprocating beam B passing in the slot a0 and carrying the clamp plate B the guide rod O secured between said clamp plate B/ and said reciprocating beam and passing through said guides c2 and a clamp for securing the churn handle to said reciprocating beam, substantially as described.
2. In a churn power, the combination with the upright A provided with a guide slat a', the upright A2 provided with guides a2, the reciprocating beam B passing in the slot c, between said upright A' and the guide slat a',

the guide rod C secured to said beam and passing through ,said guides a2, and the clamp E Consisting of the two members e2 and e and the clamp screw e adjustably connected to said beam and Clamping the Jnwo parts together, substantially as and for the purposes described.
