Be it known that I, GEORGE lV. LORD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mattapan, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consuming and Combustion Devices, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved smoke-consuming and combustion device for steam-boiler, puddling, or other furnaces, and it is carried outas follows, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l represents a front elevation of a steam-boiler provided with my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a detail bottom plan view of the adjustable air-supply-regulating device, and Fig. #irepresents a detail side elevation of Fig.

In the drawings, A represents the furnace or hre-pot of a steam-boiler B, as usual.
O represents the end brick wall, immediately above the furnace-doors D D.
E represents the grate, with its ash-pit F and ash-doors Gr G, as is common in steamboiler or other furnaces.

From the steam-space of the boiler I carry a steam-supply pipe I, provided with a valve or out-off fi, as shown in Fig. 1. Through perioiations in the front plate II are inserted one or more conductor-pipes or ejector-chambers I, the inner ends of which are screW-tlneaded, as shown at 7a, and provided with a fasteningnut k', as shown in Fig. 2, by which arrangement the pipe or pipes K may be firmly secured to the plate Il and adjusted in position relative to the latter as may be desired. To one side of the pipe K and in open communication with it is secured an air-inlet branch L, having an internal screw-thread Zin its upper open end, into Which is screwed the adjustable air-supply-regulating device, consisting of a cap M having a series of air-supply perforations fm m, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.
The perforated cap M is provided with skeleton Wings or ribs M", the edges of which are screw-threaded and adjustable inthe internal screw-threaded portion l of the air-supply pipe L, as shown in Fig.
The lower end of the pipe I enters t-he ou ter end of the ejector-chamber K,- and Within the latter is attached to said pipe I a suitable steam-ejector N of any Well-known form or construction.
Vithin the pipe K, I arrange back of the ejector N a lining O, made of asbestos cloth or other suitable fire-resisting or soft material, so as to deaden the noise caused b y forcing the steam and air through said pipe K, as fully represented in Fig. 2.
To the inner end of the pipe K is loosely screwed the curved or bent deilector-pipe I), through which the mixed air and steam from the pipes I and L is forced at a proper angle against the fuel, and thereby7 caused to intermix intim ately with the unconsum ed products from the ire, by'which a thorough combustion of such products takes place, as well as causing the smoke to be consumed.
The steam which is forced by the e j ector N through the pipe or chamber K produces a vacuum within the latter, causing the air to be drawn in through the pipe L and its airregulatiug device.
Then the cap M is screwed down against the end of the pipe L, the perforations m m serve as means for admitting the air to the pipe L. rIf it is desired to increase the air supply all that is necessary to do is to unscrew the cap M more or less from the pipe L, by which an increased volume of air is conducted into the pipe L, between the radial Win gs hl M', as fully shown in Fig. 2.
It will thus be seen that the supply ol' air to the chamber K can be regulated to a nicety simply by adjusting the position of the cap M relative to the mouth of theair-supply pipe L, as above described. The supply of steam to the ejectors may be also regulated by adj ustmentof the valve or cut-oft 'i on the steampipe I.
I prefer to use With this my invention an ejector having means for properly regulating the size of its discharge-opening and thus regulating the pressure and volume of steam ejected.
Among the advantages of this my invention ICO may be mentioned consumption of smoke, a thorough combustion of the products of the fuel, and an increase of heat in the furnace and consequent saving of fuel.
Havin g thus fully described the nature,con struction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim l. In a smoke consuming' and combustion device, in combination an ejector chamber having a steam ejector arranged within it, an air supply pipe leading to the ejector chainber and having an adjustable air inlet, an asbestos-cloth or equivalent lining within the ejector chamber and a deliector pipe connected to the latter and to the interior of the furnace substantially as specified.
2. In a smoke consuming and combustion device an ejector chamber communicating' with the interior of the furnace and having a steam ejector arrcngcd within it, combined with an air pipe connected to the ejector chamber and a regulating` cap having perforations and screw threaded Wings said wings projecting downward from the under side of the cap adapted to work in the screw threaded end of the said air pipe substantially as and for the purpose sct forth.
3. In a smoke consuming and combustion device an air supply pipe having' an internal screw thread at its outer end combined with a cap having perforations and radial wings screw threaded at their outer edges said wings projecting downward from the under side of the cap and adapted to screw into the air supply pipe substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
