(No Model.) I
I. E. STUMP.
` LAND ROLLER. YNo. 552,794. Patented Jan. 7, 1896.
ANDREW BRAHM. PHOTO-LITHO- WASHINGTUN. D C
UNITED STATES ,PATENT OFFCE.
IRA E. STUlNIP, OF CANTON, OI-IIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JACOB M. SCHNEIDER, OF SAME PLACE.
LAND-ROLLER'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,794, dated January '7, 1896.
Application filed March 20, 1895.
To all whom, it may concern.'
Be it known that I, IRA E. STUMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of refer'ence marked thereon, in which- Figure lis a perspective View of the roller. Fig. 2 is a detached view of one of the rollers. Fig. 3 is a View showing the end of one of the rollers and illustrating a manner of securing the ends of the spiral pipes, also showing the spider removed. Fig. L is a vertical section of the front or forward roller. Fig. 5 is a dctached view of one of the spiders.
The present invention has relation to landrollers; and it consists in the dierent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicatel corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the end blocks or heads, which may be substantially of the form shown, or they may be of any other desired form inasmuch as their only purpose is to support the roller shafts or bars, or, in other words, hold said bars in proper position with reference to the rollers, and at the same time hold the connectingbars. The roller shafts or bars B are formed of a length to correspond with the length of the roller proper, and are properly secured to the blocks or heads A by means of the heads o, or their equivalents.
Upon the shafts or bars B are mounted the rollers C and D, said rollers being located and arranged substantially as shown in Fig. l. Upon the peripheries of the rollers C and D are located the spiral orscrew-like tubes b and c, which spiral tubes may be secured at their ends, as illustrated in Fig. 3, or they may be differently secured, as it is immaterial how or in what manner the ends aresecured.
The rollers C are located in front of the'roll- Serial No. 542,470. (No model.)
ers D and the pitch of the spiral tubes is reversed upon each set of rollers-that is to say, if the pitch of the tubes t is such as to form a right-handed screw, the pitch of the tubes vc should be such as to form a left-hand screw.
The object and purpose of forming the tubes b and c and locating them upon the peripheries of the rollers is to provide a better means for pulverizing the ground. The ends of each of the rollers C and D are provided with the spiders E, said spiders being located substantially as illustrated in Fig. 2, and are for the purpose of providing suitable bearings for the rollers proper.
For the purpose of preventing the shafts or bars B from bending, the center support F is provided, which center support is attached to the connecting-bar G in any convenient and well-known manner.
It will be understood that the dierent rollers are all to travel in the same direction, and by changing the pitch of the spiral tubes that each set of rollers will have a tendency to move the earth in opposite directions, thereby providing a better means for pulverizing, and
at the same time the rollers will be cleaned by reason of the inner sides of faces of the rollers coming in close contact with each other; but it will be understood that the rollers should be spacedfar enough apart to provide room for the spiral tubes to rotate with the rollers without coming in contact with each other.
Having fully described my invention, what .I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters
