SHUTTLE-BOX-OPERATING MECHANISM FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,720, dated January '7, 1896.
Application filed August 27, 1895. Serial No. 560,655 9. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM SCHEID, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, Hudson county, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttle-BoX-Operating Mechanism for Looms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear-,aud exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a shuttle-boX-operating mechanism for looms in which the movements of the shuttle box levers are controlled by a series of eccentrically arranged cams operated through cams on a wheel or disk secured on the main shaft.
The invention consists in the improved shuttle-boX-operating mechanism, its liftinglevers controlling oscillating cam-wheels, in the m cans for controlling the said cam-wheels, and in the combination'and arrangements of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
in which corresponding parts are indicated by like letters of reference in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a loom provided with my improvements, only those parts be ing shown which are necessary to illustrate the nature of my said invention; Fig. 2, an enlarged detail View of the upper shuttle-box lever-controlling cam-wheels and its operating mechanism; Fig. 3, atop plan view of Fig. 2; Figs. 4 and 5, left-hand end elevations of Fig. 2 in working and normal positions respectively; Figs. 6 and '7, views similar to Figs. 2 and 3, illustrating a modified form of the upper shuttle-boX lever-operating and controlling mechanism, and Fig. 8 an enlarged detail view in elevation of the pattern-chain and of the treadle-levers operated thereby. I
In said drawings, a represents the frame of a loom; c, the shaft transmitting motion through crank c and pitman c to the lay f, which latter is supported by sword cl, fulthe frame, and controlled by spring 0 all as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. In a slot in the other arm of said angle-lever is arranged the pin 0 projecting from one end of link 0", the other end of which is pivoted to the radial lever e carrying the pawl 0 adapted to operate the ratchet-wheel 0 secured to shaft d on which the said radial lever is mounted, and which shaft has its bearings in the bracket-frame 0 The projecting pin 0 of link 0 is adapted to be engaged by the hook c pivoted to the frame and operated through cord 0 from the Jacquard machine. All the above are of the well-known construction and as shown and described in the United States Letters Patent, No. 498,260. On the shaft (1 is also secured the sprocket-wheel d carrying the patternchain, adapted to control the treadles d d, which latter are connected by cords cl, d (1 and d" respectively with the shuttle-box-operating mechanism, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the frame a or in suitable brackets are secured the stub-shafts 1), 19 b and Zn, on each of which is arranged a sliding and oscillating cam-wheel 71 77, 7& and 71 respectively. Each of said cam-wheels is provided with an annular groove adapted to be engaged by a pin arranged on the free end of angle-lever 2' (or arm 2' for the right-hand cam-wheel, Fig. 2,) which angle-lever is loosely mounted on the transverse shaft "6 having its bearings in the brackets z" t projecting from the frame 71 and 71 is provided with an arm h, from which projects a horizontally-arranged pin 71.2, adapted to be engaged by the cams or proj ections g of the wheel or disk 9 secured to the shaft Z), which latter receives its motion from shaft 0 through a train of gears arranged on the opposite end of the loom, of usual construction and not shown in the drawings.
On the outer periphery of each of the camwheels is arranged an eccentric projection 7L3, adapted at specified intervals during the operation of the machine to be brought into engagement with the lifting-lever f and thus move the same upward.
A second and smaller cam projection 71* is arranged alongside of eccentric projection h", as clearly shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, and which projection 7L is adapted, when the lifting-lever f is to be lowered, to be brought into engagement with the same and to thus support it during its downward movement, the lever resting on the said projection 7% which is returning with its carrying camwheel 73 to its normal position. Astop-pin co for cam-wheel 71 (or a for ca1n-wheel 72. prevents the said cam-wheels from turning beyond their normal and operative position, as will be manifest.
The spiral spring or surrounding the stubshaft is secured with one end to the camwheel and with its other end to the said stubshaft or to a collar n fixed on the same.
Each of the levers f and f is provided on its under side with two lugs or stops f and f, adapted to be engaged by the pointed ends of the projections 7L3 of their respective cam-wheels and to be thus held in raised position. The levers are provided about midway between said stops with a vertically-ar ranged slot engaged by the pin f projecting horizontally from the frame a. or a suitable bracket thereof. The levers are controlled or held in engagement with the cams either by fiat springs f or by spiral springs f (See Fig. 1.)
The forward end of lever f G is pivotally connected through link f with the nut or collar f on rod f while the forward end of lever f operates through arm f the shaft f traversing the loom and controlling through arm f the shuttle-boX-supporting rod on the other end of the machine.
In the modified form illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 the cam-wheels 7W, if, &c., are each provided with an eccentric slot 7L in which is adapted to operate the pin h projecting horizontally from lever h. The said lever is provided at its lower portion with a vertical In the present each be provided with an antifriction-sleeve, if so desired.
The operation of the device is as follows, reference being made especially to Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8. During the operation of plain weaving the shuttle-boX-operating mechanism is at rest. The hook 0 having been lowered, engages the pin 0 and thus prevents an gle-lever c from being operated by the cam 0 on shaft 0. IVhen the jacquard calls for the introduction of a color to be worked in a fabric, the cord 0 is drawn upward by the Jacquard mechanism, thus releasing the pin 0' and thereby bringing the an gle-lever 0 into engagement with the cam 0 Through the link a, radial lever 0 and pawl 0 the ratchetwheel 0 is thus rotated the required distance. (In the drawings one-eighth of a revolution.) The shaft (l -and sprocketwheel d are thus revolved, operating the pattern-chain until one of its rollers comes under and lifts one of the levers 01 61 In Fig. 1 of the drawings is illustrated the position of lever f when the first or top compartment of the shuttle-box is brought opposite the lay or race and ready to discharge its shuttle. Supposing that the second shuttle from the top is called for after the first shuttle has performed its operation, the cam 7L remains in its raised position that is to say, the angle-lever t and its respective treadle d are prevented from returning to their normal positions. The roller on the pattern-chain next to the roller which has lifted the said lever 61 engages and travels along the curved cam portion 01 of the latter and thus will keep the said treadle in its raised position. A second roller simultaneously lifts that treadle which controls through its cord connection the arm 2 on shaft 2', which latter, through the arm i (its pin engaging the annular groove,) slides the camwheel h on the shaft b until the pin 7&2 is in the path of the cam projection g of wheel and the projection 7L3 directly beneath the lever The wheel in its rotation and through the projection g engaging the pin h operates the cam-wheel h until the projection 7L3 has raised the lever to its highest position. The pointed end of said projection now rests against the lug or stop 1'', in which position it remains until the caurwheel is about to be returned for a different shuttle-call, as will be manifest. Through the connection of the free end of lever f with the shuttle -boX- supporting rod the latter is raised one compartment and thus the corresponding shuttle (the second one from the top) brought into operation. Should said shuttle be required for more than one pick, the hooked end lever c is lowered by the Jacquard machine into engagement with the pin 0 of link 0, thus withdrawing the angle-lever c from contact with cam 0 and thus preventing a further rotation of the shuttle-changing device on shaft 01 Now supposing that the third shuttle from the top is required, it is necessary to IIO return the cam-wheels h and 71 to their normal position. The corresponding treadles d and d are lowered by the pattern-chain, thus releasing the angle-levers from the strain of the cord connections and thereby allowing the spiral springs 71. to slide their respective cam-wheels 71 and 71 back on their stubshafts until the pins 7L2 are out of the path of the projections g of wheel g and the projections 72. in alignment with the lever f The said lever will be forced downward upon said projections 7r by the action of the springs f or f (see Fig. 1) and as the cam-wheels are oscillated backward and thus returned to their normal position by the action of the uncoiling of their respective spiral springs n, the said lever f will continue in its down ward movement until it has reached its lowermost position. Through the connection of the free end of the lever f 6 with the shuttlebox-supporting rod said rod and the box are lowered one compartment and the second shuttle from the top is thus-brought into operation. If the fourth shuttle from the top is called for the cam-wheel h is operated until the projection 7L3 has raised the lever to its highest position, when the pointed end of said projection engages the lug or stop f as will be manifest.
From the foregoing it can readily be seen that when the cam-wheels are operated to raise the lever they are brought into engagement with the same by their respective anglelevers and are oscillated by the projections g of wheel g while when the lever is to be lowered the spiral springs n, which by the former operation has been depressed and coiled tighter, perform the operation of re turning (oscillating backward) the said camwheels to their respective normal positions.
The mode of operation of the lower oscillating cam-wheels 77. and 71 and the connecting-lever f is the same as that of the upper cam-wheel and its lever f.
