SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,710, dated January '7, 1896.

provements in I-Iydraulic Shears, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to hydraulic shears, in which a movable knife is forced against one connected with a fixed bed or anvil by hydraulic pressure; and it relates particularly to the means, controlled by ahydraulic cylinder or ram, whereby the movable knife is forced down onto the iiXed knife.
rlhe principal objects of my present invention are, first, to provide in a hydraulic shears simple, durable, and efficient mechanism for forcing a movable knife against a fixed knife, and, second,to provide in such a shears a knifeholderV adapted to be operated by a wedge by means of a hydraulic ram or cylinder, the wedge not bearing directly upon the knifeholder, but upon a series of rollers interposed between said wedge and knife-holder, whereby the latter may be quickly and easily moved in a downward direction against the fixed knife with little or no friction upon the act- .uating-wedge.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of hydraulic shears provided with mechanism for operating the movable knife-holder thereof against a fixed knife in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanyin g drawings, forming part here of, in which- Figure l represents in front elevation hydraulic shears embodying features of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line a; a; of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, the fra-me or casing for the shears consists of the standards a a, and top or cap a. Between the standards a a and at the bottom thereof is rigidly mounted a bed, anvil, or block b, to which the fixed knife Z9 is suitably secured. The movable knife d is secured to a head or frame e, the ends of which are guided in the standards a a, so that the frame and knife d may have a range of vertical movement therein. Between the lower edge of the cap c and the upper edge of the knifeframe c is locate'd a movable wedge f, which is guided in openings provided in the standards a a. Between the wedge f and the upper edge of the knife-frame e are located a series of rollers 7L, which are secured to a connecting bar or rod h', as indicated in the drawings. These rollers 7L by preference are iianged, as at h2, the wedge f and frame c resting on the rollers between the flanged sides thereof. Between the wedge f and the lower edge of the cap a is placed a similar series "of rollers k united with each other by means of a bar or rod 7.a'. These rollers la are flanged, as at 7a2, in a similar manner as the rollers h, and as clearly indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
To counterbalance and raise the knifeframe an upright cylinder m is secured in the cap a', the plunger or piston m of which is connected by means of a cross-bar m2 to one end of the links m3, secured to the knifeframe e.
The wedge fis driven in one direction to depress the frame e and knifed by means of a hydraulic cylinder o, the plunger o of which is secured to the butt end of the wedge f. If desired, a returning-cylinder p, having its plunger p secured to the small end of the wedge f, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, may beused or the hydraulic cylinder o may be provided with returning means.
In operation when the cylinder o is operated its plunger forces the wedge inward from right to left, the wedge moving upon the rollers h and la, the rollers having a slight range of movement respectively upon the upper edge of the knife-frame e and the lower edgeof the cap a. The frame e and its knife d is thus slowly driven in a downward direction by the wedge and rollers until the knife cl meets the fixed or bed knife b. By the arrangement thus described little or no friction is interposed in the path aswell as movement of the wedge, owing to the fact that the Wedge does not bear directly upon the frame e but upon IOO the rollers h, and does not bear against the cap d orother fixed part of the machine, but upon the rollers 7o.
The wedge f may be returned from left to right by means of the cylinder j) or by any other preferred means, the knife-frame e being lifted as the wedge is returned by means of the counterbalancing-cylinder m.
Having thus described the nature and 0bjects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In hydraulic shears, a casing provided with an anvil and IiXed knife, a frame movable in said casing and provided with a knife, a transversely slidable wedge, two series of connected rollers,one series being interposed between, the Wedge and easing and the other between thewedge and knife frame, both series of rollers moving slightly in the same di,- rection in which the wedge isslid, and means for actuating saidzwedge, substantially asand for the purposes. described.
2. In hydraulic shears, a easing provided with an anvil and fixed knife, a frame movable in said easing and carrying a knife, a wedge adapted to be transversely slid to depress the knife frame, a series of rollers connected together and interposed between the wedge and knife frame, a series of rollers connected together and interposed between the casing and wedge, said two series of rollers traveling slightly in the same direction in which the wedge is slid, means for operating said Wedge and means adapted to eounterbalance said knife frame and to return the same when not depressed by the wedge, substair tially as and for the purposes described.
