SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,610, dated January '7, 1896. Application filed February 23, 1895. Serial No. 589,406. (No model.)

and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Guard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wood-working machines, such as hand-joiners, variety molders, shapers and the like, and its object is to provide a new and improved guard which is comparatively simple and durable in construction, and arranged to prevent accidents to the attendants of the machine.
The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure I is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The machine on which the improvement is applied is provided with the usual frame A, having a table B formed with a transverse slot into which extends a rotary cutter 0, adapted to cut the material E passed over the table I; alongside the gage D. Over the table B, directly above the cutter O, is arranged a hood F curved on its under side to be out of contact with the cutting-edges of the cutter, the said hood F being preferablymade in sections F F F, fitted to slideoneupon the other, with the innermost section F formed with a double beveled head F to permit of readily passing the work E over the table B, along the gage D, and to press or fold up the hood F to one side.
Suitable springs G are employed to holdthe sections F F F normally in an extended position, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, and the outermost section F is mounted to slide on rods II, pivoted at their outer ends at H on a plate I, provided with downwardly-extending rods 1, fitted to slide vertically in a suitable bracket A attached to one side of the frame A. Springs G are coiled on the rods II to press against the outermost section F, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 3.
The lower ends of the rods I are connected with each other by a cross-bar 1 to the middle of which is attached one end of a rope J extending upwardly to pass over a pulley J, journaled in the bracket A, the rope then extending inwardly over a second pulley J likewise j ournaled on the bracket A.
A weight J 3 is attached to the depending lowermost end of the rope J, so as to counterbalance the rods 1, plate I, rods II and the hood F supported thereon, to permit of conveniently raising and lowering the hood according to the size of the material or work E under treatment.
Thus it will be seen that by the arrangement described the hood F will readily yield transversely, to permit the work E to be passed longitudinally over thetable B, to be acted upon by the cutter C in the usual manner, at the same time covering the remaining part of the cutter, to prevent the attendants hands or other part of his body from being injured by coming in contact with the cutter 0. As the hood F is mounted to 'move vertically according to the size of the work under treatment, any desired material or work may be operated upon in the usual manner without the hood interfering with the proper working of the cutter and with the work; furthermore, the hood F will extend itself transversely relative to the position of the gage D, so as to at all times cover up the cutter, to prevent the attendant from becoming injured.
By having the rods II fitted on the plate I, I am enabled to swing the hood F to one side of the machine away from the table B, so as to give ready access to the cutter for repairs and other purposes.
I-Iavin g thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a table and a horizont'ally arranged rotary cutter, of a guard held above the cutter, the said guard being made in sections arranged to telescope horizontally and longitudinally of the cutter and transversely of the table to expose more or less of the cutter, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a table and a horizontally arranged rotary cutter, of a guard held above the cutter, the said guard being made in sections arranged to telescope horizontally and longitudinally of the cutter and transversely of the table to expose more or less of the cutter, the said guard being also vertically adjustable, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with a horizontally arranged rotary cutter, of a guard held above the cutter and made in sections arranged to telescope horizontally and longitudinally of the cutter and transversely of the table to expose more or less of the cutter, and springs" normally holding the said sections in the extended position, the said guard being verti- Cally adjustable and provided with a counterbalancing device, substantially as shown and described. 4:. A guard, comprising a spring pressed hood, horizontally arranged rods on which the said hood is mounted to slide, a plate to which the outer ends of the said rods are pivoted, and a vertically adjustable support for the said plate, substantially as shown and described.
5. A guard comprising a hood made in laterally yielding sections,horizontally arranged rods for supporting the said hood, a plate on which the outer ends of the said rods are pivoted, rods carrying the said plates at their upper ends and mounted to slide vertically, and a counterbalancing device for the said rods, plate and hood, substantially as shown and described.
6. A guard comprising a hood made in sections fitted to slide one upon the other and springs normally holding said sections in the extended position, horizontally arranged rods 011 which the outermost section is mounted to slide, a plate on which the outer ends of the said rods are pivoted, rods fitted to slide vertically in suitable bearings and connected at their upper ends to the said plate, and a coun'terbalancing device, substantially as shown and described.
