SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 552,488, dated December 31 1895.

13e it known that I, ANTON SAUTER, of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IIorseshoes; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact Clescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention contemplates certain new-s and useful improvements in horseshoes, and it comprises the novel features of construction and the detail combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth,'and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved horseshoe. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, the calks being shown removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a similar view on line 4 4, same figure. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5, Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of the shoe, and CL a depending flange at the toe end thereof. This flange is Abeveled on its inner surface c'. Opposite to this beveled flange are two similarlybeveled flanges Ca2 and CL2, which also taper on their inner surfaces CCL-that is, the dovetail opening thus formed between the flanges Cv and CL2 is wider at one rend than at the other.
B is a toe-calk with which is made integral an upper flange b, which is beveled on both sides to correspond with the bevels of flanges Cc and CL2, and is also tapered on the side b/ to conform to the taper of the flanges CL2, so that when the flange is inserted through the Wider end of the dovetail socket and pushed to its utmost limit it will be snugly held in said socket. At the center of this flange is a forward dovetail socket C, which extends from a recess CZ in the rear portion of said flange.

beveled end CZ', which, when the key is inserted in the opening between the two flanges CL2, will extend into the dovetail socket C of the calk-flange, its side shoulders CL2 abutting against the inner ends of the recess Cl. A screw cl3 screwed into coincident screw-holes CZJA d5 of said key and shoe-body, serves to hold the key in place, and thus firmly lock or bind the toe-calk.
The heel ends of the shoe have each a depending flange E beveled and tapered on its inner side c, the taper extending from the outer side of the shoe inward. A beveled and tapered shoulder e formed in the under side of the shoe-body directly opposite each flange E forms with the latter a tapering dovetail socket e2. The heel-calks F are beveled and tapered at their upper ends f so that when inserted into the dovetail socket e2 they will fit snug therein. From the front of each heel-calk projects a flange f which, when the calk is positioned, bears against the under side of the shoe-body, and a screw f2 serves to securely lock the same in place.
From what has been said it will seen that I have provided an extremely simple and inexpensive horseshoe of the class described, and that by means of the tapered dovetail sockets thetoe and heel calks are made to fit snug in place, and that the tapered end of the key fitting a correspondingly tapered socket in the toe-calk will, together with the holding-screw, firmly lock the latter in place. Likewise the heel-calks lit snug in their sockets and the anges thereof are firmly secured to the shoe-body by the respective holdingscrews.
I claim as my invention- In a horseshoe, the combination with the body A, having a flange CL at the toe-endthereof beveled on its inner surface CL', two similarly beveled flanges CL2, a2 having tapering inner surfaces, whereby the dovetail opening between the flanges a and CL2 is made Wider at one end than at the other, of the toe-calk B provided with a tapered flange bv formed integral therewith, and having both of its sides beveled to ft between the flanges CL and a2, said ztnge b having L central dovettl Socket C which extends from a reeess d in the rear portion of said flange b, t Het key D having a reduced beveled end d and side shoulders cl2, and the screw d3 adapted to engage suitable holes (Z4, (Z5 in said key and thus loek the same and seid toe-calli n place, suhstantally as set forth. 1o
