Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICEQ AARON OASEBEER, OF SIPESVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR JOINTING STAVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,238, dated June 5, 186B.
' Sipesville, Somerset county, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a newr and Improved Stave-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference made thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in two upright posts forming holding-gages, the edge next to the stave being an arc of a circle, and having three setting-screws in each, by means of which a true beveled joint for a vessel of any circumference, from a keeler to a barrel, may be made.
I construct niy holder by attaching the holding-gages (marked A A) to each end of a block the width ot' an ordinary joint-plane and having two strips on the side, so as to cause the holder to run over the plane, and a strip (marked D) having ball-like ends (marked E E) next to the gage, for placing the hand to hold the stave close to the gage-posts A A `and to push the holder over the plane. It is operated by placing' the holder on ajoint-plane, adj Listing the setting-screws B B B to make the bevel to suit the circumference of the vessel required, then placing a stave against the gage-holder, pressing it closely to the lower corner (marked O) with the thumb when the gage is on the right side of the plane, and with the ngers when on the left, and holding the stave and pressing it on the plane-bit with the other hand. The holder and stave are then pushed over the plane in the. manner indicated on the diagram. The half of one side of the stave is thus jointed. The stave is then ended and the half of the other sidejointed in a similar Way.
Tojoint the sides of the other end the jointer is turned around, so as to put the gages on the left side of the plane, after which the process
