No. 552,121. I Patented Deo. 31, 1895.
EDVUARD ALLEN (llllllllll AN I) JOSEPH S. LlYER, Oli KSSIMMEE, lfllllllllllv RATCHET-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552.12, dated December 31, 1895. Application tiled Octoher 2, i395. Serial No. 566,3?9. (No modell? To aZl whom it muy Concern:
Be it known that We, EDWARD ALLEN tllL- nnnr and JosnPH OLIVER, citizens. of the United Sintes, Yresiding' at liseilnn'lee, in the county of Osceola and State of Florida, have invented :l new and useful Ratellet-lVreneh, ol which ille following is :l Specification.
The invention relates to improvements in rntehetwrenches.
The object of the present invention is teilnprove the eonetruetiol'l oi' rait(diet-wrenches, and to provide one Whiell will he espeeiz'lll3v adept ed for operating on the nnte of fish-plate holte` and the like, and which will lle ednlted for drilling and analogous uses whe-re the ratchet device moet effectual.
A further object of the invention is to provide elleh :l ratchet device in which the parte may be arranged to elnlnge the direetion of the pnvvls to enable the devlee to be ilperzlied in either direction, to the right orto the left..
The invention consists in the eonstrnetion :nld novel eonlbilnltion and arrangement of parte hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
ln lille drawings, Figure l in n side elevation of n wrench eonetrneted in neeordanee with this invention. Fig. a longitndinel Seetional view. Fig'. 3 le n eeetional view on lille X X of Fig. l. Fig. l is a, Similar vielv on line Y Y of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is :l detail Sectional view illustrating the construction of the removable nut-receiving socket.
Like numerals of reterenee designate eer responding parteY in all the gnree of the dreivings.
l designates e Shaft provided at one end lv i th rntehet-tseeth vlliell nre en gagged by e spring actuated pavvl 3 of a head i, and the shaft line fixed t0 it adjacent to its other end n intellet- Wheel 5, which is engaged by a similar sp rin gnetuated pnwl i5 of nn operntinglever or llandle 7. The head al is swiveled to the shaftl and is provided with a Boeket to receive the Sinne, and it iS preferably eon'lposed of :l llodv and n removable plate l. The body 8 is provided with n longitudinal recess communicating with the opening or socket, which receives the end et the Shaft l, and the pnwl 3 in :l-rrznlged in the li'lng'itudinel rrecess and line dieH posed on it a Spiral spring lll, wh'leh engages n shoulder oi' the pallvl, ind n suitable Shoulder or stop of the head, whereby the Spring in adapted to throw the pmvl in ward into en gagen'lentwith the teeth 2. The pnrwl ie beveled at one side, and is adapted to puse over the rnteheeteeth when the latter nre brought egninet ille beveled t'nee of the pawl, and it is capable oi' elleeliing illejotation of the shaft when the teeth nre brought egninet the Shoulder ot' it. end the outer end ol' the pmvl is provided with n hnindlegvlliell nornmlly tltslvithin n trnnSvel-se reress or hiinrention ll of the lie-nil, and held therein llv ille ,en-ing lil. l'vlnfn it. le desired to elnlnge lln direetion of tile rntehet. the pzuvl is drawn filnin'nrd Sullieientlyto disengnge it` handle from ille transverse reee'. l l, and it in given n. heit-turn, the Spring eel-ving to drn W the pevvl into tile transvereel Jeens ngniin to loek il efgnnet neeidentzll rotation The operating lever or erin 7 is provided with ilinnges or eers Vl2,\vhiell are arranged on an enlargement i3 of the shaft an. opposite sides of the rntellet.-\vlleel, and il is provided with n longitudinal llore or opening in which arranged the pavvl tl, which is nrtuzlted by ai Spring lil and which is provided :it its,l enter end with a handle or heed il, fitting within n transverse reellen or llil'urention l5 of the outer end of ille arm or lever. The pzln'l is adapted to be reversed by withdrawing the handle or head ont of engagement with the recess or bifurcation l5 to ehnnge the dirofflion of the ratehet, simile-r tothe pnlvll, and its ellgeging end is beveled in n like manner. The erin er lever is preferably composed et' n body portion and n renlovnllle plate Seoul-ed to the ljodf perlion, Similar to the plete '.l of the heed e.
The shaft l is provided with n pe'llvgonnl end lli. lle-ving n reeinng'ulnr eoeltet 1T. and adapted to receive n` relnovnllle eof'llet i8 or :l chuck to enable the device lo revolve n drill or other tool. llvihis eonstruetiigln the device is; adapted to be elllnloyed as n `vvreneh or u drill, end it is zldnped to be readily employed for any analogous purpoee Where a rniehet devine is desire-ble or advantageous.
lt will he seen that the vvreneli is Simple and inexpensive in eonstruetion, that it is positive and relinllle in operation. and that it` palvln nlnlv be readily reversed lo ellnnge the l. In a device ot' the class described the combination of a shaft provided atr one end with ratchet teet h, a head swiveled to the shaft and receiving the ratchet teeth and provided with a transverse recess or bifurcation, a reversible spring actuated pawl mounted on the head and provided at its outer end with a handle engagingthe said reces or bifurcation and adapted to be drawn outward to permit the pawl to be re versed,a ratchet wheel tixed to the shaft, an arm or lever journaled on the shaft contiguous to the ratchet wheel and provided at .its outer end with a transverse recess or bifurcation, and a longitudinally disposed springr actuated pawl t5 mounted in the arm or lever and engaging' the atchet wheel and provided at its outer end with a head fitting in the bifurcation or recess of the arm or lever, said pawl I3 being' capable of reversal, when its head is turned out of engagement with the recess or bifurcation, substantially as described.
Q. In a device ot' the class described, the crcnnbination of a shaft provided at one end with ratchet teeth and adapted to rcecive a nut socket on its other end, a ratchet wheel fixed to th shaft, a head swivelcd to the shaft and receiving' the ratchet teeth, an optfrating arm or levcrjournaled on the shalt to the ratchet wheel, and the reversclhvY springA actuated pawls mounted in the head and the operating' arm or lever, and engaging' the ratchet teeth of. the shaft and the ratchet wheel, substantiall)Y as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing' as our own we have hereto affixed our signat ures in the presence of two witnesses.
