BATH-BRUSHLAPPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 551,978, dated December 24, 1895. Application filed March 12, 1895. Serial No. 541,477. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. LYONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county ofSt. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Brush Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I

My invention relates to improvements in bath-brush apparatus; and it consists of the combination of a suitable support, a lever pivotally mounted on the same, and a spring connecting said support and lever, whereby the latter moves under tension, a scrubbing device mounted on said lever and a handle for operating the same.

It also consists of the combination of a suitable support, a lever pivotally mounted on the same and provided with a yoke, a spring connecting said support and said lever, means forvarying the tension of said spring, a scrubbing -device support mounted on one arm of said yoke and an operating-handle on the other arm.

It also consists of the combination of asupport which is revoluble under spring-tension, a lever pivotally mounted on said support and provided with a yoke, a scrubbing device on one arm of said yoke and an operating-handle on the other.

It also consists of certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the devices embodying my invention in their lowered operative position as placed in relation to a bath-tub when used in conjunction with the same, the standard form of supportbeing used. Fig. Zrepresents' an end elevation of my said devices in their raised and inoperative position, the bracket form of support being employed. Fig. 3 repre sents an enlarged detail view of the spring connection between the yoke-supporting lever and the standard or bracket. Fig. 4 represents a detail view of the scrubbing device supporting end of the yoke. Fig. 5 represents a detail view of the handle end of the yoke. Figs. 6 and 7 represent, respectively, a side elevation and a top plan view of the brush or cloth attaching plate. Fig. 8 represents a detail top plan view of the standard or support. Fig. 9 represents a detail side elevation of the same. Fig. 10 represents a detail side elevation of a modified form of support adapted to be clamped to the edge of the bathtub, and Fig. 11 represents a detail top plan view of the same.

A and A in the drawings represent respectively the supporting standard and bracket, which are respectively secured to the floor and Wall or other suitable place by bolts or screws and in proximity to a bath-tub B. The standard or bracket is preferably providedat its top with a yoke IAattached thereto by a swivel-joint. This joint is composed of ahorizontal circular plate a, having a slotted projection a and formed upon or attached to the top of the standard or bracket. This support is also provided at its upper end with upwardly-projecting studs a a a of dgraually-decreasing size and one mounted upon the other, the uppermost stud being screw-threaded to receive the securing-nut a A plate a having aslotted projection a and a hollow vertical stud a is mounted loosely about the stud a the plate a resting upon the plate a with the slots of the respective projections of said plate coinciding, and said plates being secured together by a bolt or screw a passed through said slots and secured by a nut. It will thus be seen that the plate a can be adjusted upon the plate a to the desired extent and then looked in such position. The plate a is also provided upon its upper surface with a springreceiving recess a. The yoke A is provided with a spring-retaining plate I) having a spring-engaging recess 1) and a downwardlyprojecting hollow stud 19 which latter fits about the stud a and rests upon the studs a and a A spiral spring B is placed about the studs a and b with its respective ends in the recesses b and a and thus any movement of the yoke A in either direction will increase the tension of the spring and tend to return the said" yoke. to its, first position when the pressure upon' it is removed.

A lever C is mounted in the yoke A by means of a trunnion 0, upon which it is rigidly secured, the trunnion being supported at its ends by conically-pointed screws c,which pass through screw-threaded apertures in the enlarged heads formed on the ends of the arms of the yoke and engage conical recesses in the ends of the trunnion.

TWO sleeves e e are mounted on the trunnion on the opposite sides of the lever O and are secured to the trunnion by set-s crews e e. A spiral spring D is mounted on the trunnion on each side of the lever Obetween the sleeve 6 and the respective arm of the yoke A, the ends of said springs being seated in recesses c c in the sleeves and the arms of the yoke respectively. It will thus be seen that the lever 0 cannot move except under tension of the springs D, and this tension can be regulated by loosening the set-screws e e and revolving the sleeves slightly on the trunnion and again securing them in position by said screws.

The outer end of the lever G is provided with a yoke O, the arms of which are adapted respectively for the attachment of 'a scrubbing-device support G and an operating-handle F. The end of the arm 0 of the yoke is bi :t'urcated to accommodate the apertured end f of the handle F, which apertured end is split and provided with two screw-threaded lugs f f, which are secured together by a thumbscrew f The apertured end of the handle is mounted in the bifurcated end of the arm 0 by means of a stud or pin 0 which passes through said apertured end. It will be seen from the aforegoing that the handle can be turned or adjusted on the pin 0 byloosening the thumb-screw f The handle is locked in the desired adjusted position by again tight-' ening the thumb-screw. The other arm 0 of the yoke is provided with an enlarged aper-j tured split head 0 provided with lugs 0 said lugs being secured together by a bolt 0 A scrubbing-device support G is mounted in the split head 0 by means of a stud g, with which it is provided. This support consists of a flat plate g, to the center of which the said stud is attached. Said plate is provided with screw-holes g for securing either a scrubbing brush, cloth or any like scrubbing device, a brush being shown in the drawings.

In Figs. 10 and 11 I have shown a form of support for clamping upon the edge of the bath-tub or any other suitable projecting edge. This support consists of a clamping portion H and'a support or standard H. The portion I-I consists of two similarly-shaped members h h, each of which is provided at one end with a hollow semispherical ball-casing 7L2, said casings being provided with securing-ears 7L and peripheral slots h. A yoke 71. extends downward from the side of each of the casings 77?, each arm of the yokes being bent into an arched loop 71 adapted to pass over the edge or head of the tub. The lower end of the yoke of the part 71. is provided with clamping thumb-screws he, by

means of which the support is clamped on the tub. The two parts 7?. 72/ are secured-together by bolts 77. h passing respectively through the ears 71 and through the middle parts of the yoke portions. v

The lower end of the standard H is provided with a globe or ball h, which is firmly clamped in any desired adjusted position within the hollow ball-casings, said standard passing through the slots h, which register with each other in position. The upper part of the standard H is constructed in a similar manner to the standard or bracket already described.

The springs D are heavy enough to overbalance the weight of the lever C, yoke C, and other devices attached thereto, so that the normal position of the lever O is upright, as

shown in Fig. 2. i

It Will be observed that by having the handle F adjustably attached to the yokeO different proportioned persons-can use the device with equal facility and ease'by simply adjusting said handle F so that the body of the bather is comfortably accommodated between said handle and the brush with sufficient room to spare for the rapid movement of the handle up and down without touching or injuring the body of the bather. As shown in Fig. 1, the device is mounted conveniently near the bath-tub so thatthe yoke C will come directly over the'same, and a-bather standing in said tub and between the arms of the yoke O can, by moving the handle F up and down and inclining his body slightly to the rear, thoroughly scrub or wash his back, chest and sides.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a bath brush apparatus, the combina tion of a suitable support, a lever pivotally mounted on the same, a spring connecting said support and lever whereby the latter moves IIO undertension, a scrubbing device support mounted on said lever and a handle for operating said lever, substantially as described.

2. In a bath brush apparatus, the combination of a suitable support, a lever pivotally mounted on the same and provided with a yoke, a spring connecting .said support and said lever, means for varying the tension of said spring, a scrubbing device support mounted on one arm of said yoke and an operating handle on the other arm, substantially as described.

3. In a bath brush apparatus, the combination of a suitable support, a lever pivotally mounted on the same and provided with a yoke, a spring connecting said support and said lever whereby the latter moves under tension, a scrubbing device support adjustably mounted on one arm of said yoke and an operating handle adjustably mounted on the proper, and ayoke having swivel connection therewith, a trunnion mounted between the arms of said yoke, a lever having a yoke and attached to said trunnion, springs connecting the support with said latter yoke,.and a scrubbing device support and operating handle mounted on said lever, substantially as described.

5. In a bath brush apparatus, the combination of a suitable support, a yoke having swivel connection therewith, a spring controlling said swivel action, a lever mounted between the arms of said yoke and a scrubbing device support and operating handle mounted on said lever, substantially as described.

6. In a bath brush apparatus, the combination of a suitable support a yoke having swivel connection therewith, a spring controlling said swivel action, a lever pivotally mounted in said yoke, a spring connecting said support and said lever whereby the latter moves under tension, a scrubbing device support mounted on said lever and a handle for operating said lever, substantially as described.

7. In a bath brush apparatus, the combination of a suitable support, a yoke having swivel connection therewith, an adjustable spring controlling said swivel connection, a lever pivotally mounted in said yoke, adj ustable springs connecting said support and 1ever whereby the latter moves under tension, a scrubbing ,device support mounted on said lever and an operating handle for said lever, substantially as described.
