I, however, prefer to use the improvements in the pole in connection with the following, which comprises the second portion of my invention.

I provide a suitable combined housing and cornice J, consisting of the front molding K, the top board L, end boards M, and rear board N, which forms an inverted trough or housing 0, in which the curtain-pole A is lodged when the curtains are in place, and this I secure to the wall, &c., P, as indicated in Fig. 45. It is clear that with this arrangement, by pulling on the cords the pole A can be raised, and by releasing them it can be lowered, the curtain which is suspended from the pole by the clamps G being simultaneously raised or lowered, so that it can be manipulated as desired, and when raised the pole and fixtures are entirely out of sight, thus enabling me to use rougher material in its construction than if it were to be exposed.

Instead of usingthe combined housing and cornice I can secure the means for raising and lowering the pole directly to the windowframe or to a cornice of the usual or desired construction without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A curtain pole or support comprising the two bars B, B, each having a longitudinal quadrantal and segmental recess formed in one of its upper sides and a vertical side leading to the edge of said recess, the said bars being juxtaposed with their vertical sides opposed to form a longitudinal slot, the edges of the said recesses being aligned to form a complete longitudinal groove opening out of the top of the bar, combined with detachable plates for securing the ends of the bars together, segmental blocks supported in said groove and links depending from said blocks through said slot, the groove opening in the bar being wider than said blocks, substantially as described.

A curtain pole or support consisting of two bars B, B, each provided with a longitudinal recess 0, which is a segment of a circle, and a vertical side 0, which bars, when juxtaposed, form a central longitudinal and segmental groove E, and a longitudinal slot F in the bottom which communicates with the groove, the groove opening out of the top of the bars, combined with the segmental blocks I which are free to move in said groove, links secured to the blocks and extending downwardly through said longitudinal slot, and cross bars securing the bars B, B, together between the ends of said latter bars, substantially as described.

3. A curtain support comprising a pole provided with means for detachably securing a curtain or the like thereto, a cornice or housing adapted to contain the pole and upper edge of the curtain, &c., and means secured within the housing for raising and lowering the pole into or from said housing, substantially as described.
