RIBBON-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551 ,738, dated December 17, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILFRED STRAW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of WVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ribbon- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to ribbon or braid holders-such, for instance, as are used in connection with a roll of ribbon or tape to prevent the unwinding of the same.

It is the object of my invention to generally improve upon holders of this class, and particularly to simplify their construction, thus lessening the cost of manufacture.

The particular object of my invention is to provide in connection with said holder a thumb-piece by means of which the roll can be manipulated or suspended from an eye.

It is also an important object to construct the holder in such a manner as to avoid the necessity of threading the ends of the ribbon through the holder, and thereby permit of its free application to the rolls.

Upon the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, the same letters of reference denote like or corresponding parts upon the several figures, and of which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a roll of ribbon provided with my improved holder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a roll of ribbon provided with my improved holder. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspectiye view of a holder practically similar to that applied in Fig. 1. Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 show slight modifications of construction, the latter showing a holder blanked from sheet metal.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, it willbe seen that my holder is extremely simple in construction, and therefore can be produced by automatic machinery very quickly and cheaply.

The construction set forth permits me to produce my holder from a single piece of wire, and avoids the employment of knots and sharp or abrupt bends, all of which are objectionable since they are liable to deface the ribbon as the same is being unwound.

As previously stated my holder consists of a single piece of metal, and preferably of the shape shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It further consists of a wire bent in such a manner as to practically traverse the width of a roll of rib- .bon three times, and thus form two adjacent loops A and B open at opposite ends to permit of the free introduction of the ribbon. The central portion C serves as the principal or main stem of the holder, and, as will be seen with reference to Figs. 1 and 2, is designed to have the two outer wraps of the roll pass over it, while. the adjoining parallel portions D and E of the wire serve to snugly fit over the outside surface of the outer wraps in the manner illustrated. This con struotion serves to insure the retainment of the holder to the spool, and to afford an even and otherwise desirable tension to the ribbon as the same is drawn from the roll.

The upper end of the wire I form into a hook in such a way as to assist in the retainment of the holder in its proper-position upon the roll, and also in a manner which will afford a desirable thumb-piece by means of which the roll may be held or suspended during the drawing off of the ribbon.

In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings Ihave shown one end of the wire holder bent in at a right angle, as at a. This deflected portion of the holder in practice would be'of a length equal to several layers of material, and said end would fit up snugly against the side of the roll, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The hook F is formed of the main stock by simply returning the wire to the center of the width of the roll, as at c, and then rolling it back in the manner illustrated. This hook is found to be very desirable in connection with my holder as it affords a large and convenient thumb-piece having a yieldable central pull, and also being applicable to rolls of ribbon whose blocks do not have central holes, or rolls which may be wound on pasteboard tubes. A further and more important feature of the hook is that it permits of the roll being suspended from an eye or peg in a millinery or dressmaking establishment, or for exhibition purposes in show-windows, and upon ribbon-counters, where it is oftentimes desirable to suspend rolls of ribbon in various forms, and possibly in the latter place in such a manner as to permit of the ribbon being withdrawn without removing the roll from its peg or other means of support.

The operation of attaching my novel holder to a roll is extremely simple since it does not necessitate the threading of the ribbon through the loop, nor securing the holder to the center block of the roll. As will be seen the ribbon can readily be inserted into the upper loop A, and then from the opposite side likewise be slid into the remaining loop B.

In this my invention I do not wish to be confined or limited to the exact detail of e011- struetion shown in any one figure of the drawings, since my invention may justly be construed to cover such modifications as are therein shown, and

Therefore what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an improved article of manufacture, a suspendable ribbon holder adapted to be attached to any suitable eye or support, con.- sisting of a single wire, the lower portion thereof being bent to form the two loops A and B, consecutively as shown to engage the outer wraps of the ribbon roll, the upper portion being bent outwardly and over, central with said loops to form a hook having a free end to engage any suitable support, the whole arranged substantially as described.
