AUGUST RENNER, .IR., OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
BRIDGE FOR STRINGED MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,450, dated December 17, 1895.
Application filed October 18, 1895. Serial No. 566,148. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST RENNER, .Ir., a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented an Improved Mandolin- Bridge for Stringed Musical Instruments, of which the following, accompanied with drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention.
Figure 1 is a top view; Fig. 2, a side view; Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 4, an end view; Fig. 5, a vertical longitudinal section filled; Fig. 6, a bottom view.
Letter A is a bottom piece; B, bone or wood inlaid with bone or ivory; O, strings; D, nails to fasten B on A; E, vertical apertures in A; G, bottom of A; H, surface to carry B; I, spaces between the metal; J, metal.
The object of my invention is to improve the sound of any mandolin or other stringed musical instrument to which it can be applied.
I attain the object of my invention by vertical apertures E through A, and filling the same full with any kind of soft metal, or composition of soft metals, to increase the volume of sound resulting from the vibrations of the strings being forced through the spaces I, the metal causing the vibrations to be limited to the wood between the metal. On the top of piece A, filled with metal, I fasten piece B, of bone or wood inlaid with bone or ivory, of a desired height, length, and width to surface H, with two nails D, and glue at each nail, tapered for strings O to rest on. The top piece 13 is made separate from A, to overcome any resistance to the transmission of vibrations to the spaces I.
I am aware that bone, or wood inlaid with bone or ivory, and mandolin bridges of the same pattern have been used prior to my invention.
What I do claim for my invention is- An improved mandolin bridge for stringed musical instruments, consistingof the back A with vertical apertures E therethrough, filled with metal, and the top piece B, secured with nails D, as shown and described.
