OARLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551 ,265, dated December 10, 1895.

To LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, VILLIS E. DE RIAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stryker, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarlocks, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to oarlocks for beats, and has for its objects to provide an improved construction of the same that will permit the ready insertion of the oar therein, will securely retain said oar when once inserted, and will allow a universal movement to the car in the hand of the oarsman. These objects I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device. 2 is a central vertical section of the same, the shank thereof being shown in full lines. Fig. 3 is a horizontal t *ansverse section, the retainingplate being removed; and Fig. is a detail perspective view of: the retaining-plate.
In the said drawin gs, the reference-1mmeral 1 denotes the supporting-shank, the same being adaptcd to be inserted in an aperture in the gunwale of the boat, as seen in Fig. 2, where the letter is shown in dotted lines, a shoulder 2 being provided on said shank to limit its insertion therein. Any suitable means may he employed for retaining this shank in the gunwale.
The upper end of the shank is formed in the shape of a hall 3 for receiving the oarlock and permitting a universal movement to the latter thercon.
The oarlock proper consists of the th01es' 3L, formed integral at their lower ends with a half-socket 5, the upper surface of the same being substantially circular in cross-arca to conform to the shape of the ordinary car. This socket is formed with a circular opening in its lower end somewhat larger in diameter than the upper end of the shank 1 below the ball 3,but smaller than the diameter of said hall. The upper inner surface of said socket is open and is adapted to he closed by the plate 7, concaved on its under surface to suit the configuration of the ball 3 and form the upper half of the socket therefor. (No model) der 8 formed in the inner surface of the socket 5 serves to prevent the plate 7 from being forced too far into said socket and thus jam ming the hall 3 therein. Lu gs 9 projecting to each side of the upper surface of said plate are adapted to fit into recesses 10 in the lower meeting portion of the tholes, and are provided with countersunk screw-holes 11 to af ford a means for fastening the parts together by means of suitable screws.
It Will be understood that the upper surfaces of the plate 7 and the lugs 9 are slightly concaved to suit the configuration of the tholes and present an unbroken hearing-surface for the oar.
The tholes 4 are formed at their upper ends into the lugs 12, which are adapted to be brought together by the threaded thumbscrew 13, passing through an aperture in one of them and enga-ging in a similar threaded aperture in the other.
From the above description the operation of my device will be understood to be as follows: The oar is inserted by loosening the thumbscrew 13 sufficiently to permit the insertion of theformcr therein endwise from the handle, the tholes spreading apart by their own resiliency. Now by screwing up the thumb-screw the car Will be clamped therein, and the shank 1 may he inserted in its hole in the gunwale and the device will be ready for use.
In order to remove the shank 1 from the carlock it is only necessary to remove the screws retaining the plate 7 in place and the former can he then drmm out from the top of the socket 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An oarlock,consisting of a shank adapted to be inserted into a boat gunwale and formed at its upper end into a hall, the tholes formed at their lower meeting point into a halfsocket adapted to receive the ball therein, and a retaining plate removahly secured in the upper part of said halfsocket and adapted to form the upper half of the hall socket, substantially as described.
2. An oarlock, consisting of two resilient tholes movably connected to the boat gunwale and formed at their upper ends into apertured lugs, in combination with a thumb ICO serew adapted to pass through the apertu1es in said lu gs to bring the parts together, substantially as described.
3. In an 02L1100k, the combination of two reslent tho1es formed at their upper free ends into apertured 1ugs and EL1J their lower ends with L half-socket, a thumb screwf0r draw-- ing together the upper ends of said tholes, a shank adapted to be nserted into the boat gunwale and formed at its upper end into a ball adapted to be nserted into the halfsocket, end aretanng plate removably attachedt the half socket end adapted' toform the upper half of said socket, substantially as described.
