SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,117, dated December 10, 1895.

Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH HEINRICH FLOTTMANN, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Bochum, inthe Empire of Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Chuck for Holding Flanged Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved work-holder 4 comprising a yoke having offsets provided axis of the work-piece.
with recesses and recessed clamping-pieces, with means for holding the clamping-pieces in a certain relation to the offsets, as will be hereinafter pointed out.
To enable my invention to be fully under'- stood, I will describe how it can be carried into practice by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan, Fig. 2 is a side view, Fig. 3 is a front view, and Fig. 4 is an elevation, of the work-piece. Fig. 5 is a section thereof. Fig. 6 is an inner View of the upper clamping part. Fig. 7 is a plan thereof, and Fig. 8 is a detail representing a clamp-piece.
Similar reference-letters indicate similar parts throughout the drawings.
The means for carrying out the invention consist, essentially, of a yoke-shaped clamp a, which is threaded at the central part, so that it may be screwed into the spindle CZ of the machine. The clamp d is set off at a, Fig. 6, while at the front part it is provided with a recess a2. Into these recesses the workpiece h is placed. For this purpose the workpiece is provided with cross-ribs c at two opposite sides, the branches of these ribs being arranged symmetrically and vertically to the The work-piece is then placed in such a manner that one rib lies between the recess a2, while the ribs vertical thereto rest upon the offset a.
After having placed the work-piece it is xed to the clamp. This is effected by means of two clamp-pieces d, Fig. 8, through which are passed the screw-bolts e, fixed to the clamp, and are held in place by -means of nuts f. As shown by Fig. S, the clamp-pieces are provided with a recess in which the fourth rib is adapted to fit, so that the clamppieces in tightening the nuts press upon the two resting ribs. By this way the work-piece is secured against any lateral displacement.
In the example shown the work-piece is provided -with three anges b b2 b3 to be wrought or turned, the flange b being just in working position. The iiange b' being wrought, the work-piece is removed, whereupon itis turned about ninety degrees and placed -again into the clamp, so that other branches of the cross-ribs serve as a rest, and the second ange may be wrought. |The third flange is wrought in similar manner, and so on.
It is obvious that instead of the cross-ribs, also other regular ribs-as square, pentagonal, zc., ribs-may be used. In every case, however, the clamps must be provided with the reversed forms of the work-pieces in question.
Iith the same advantage the described device may be used in such cases in which the work-piece is fixed, while the tools are Inovable.
Having now described and ascertained the nature of my invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- In combination with the yoke a, the offsets a, having the recesses a2 and the recessed clamp pieces, and means for holding the clamping piece to the yoke and adjacent to the offset a' with a recess between the same and the clamping piece', substantially as described.
