SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0u55Q 8 79, dated December 3, 1895. Application filed December 10, 1894. Serial No. 531,371. (No model.)
To atZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES H. GOLLING and ALLEN J. KIEFFER, both citizens of the United States, residing at Nevada, in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio,.have invented, certain newand useful Improvements in Devices for Ringing Hogs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of devices which are employed for inserting a ring in the nose of a hog or other animal, and which embody a pair of nippers or pinchers adapted to carry the ring between its jaws and insert the same as the jaws are brought together.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple and improved ringing device of that type which is adapted for carrying a number of rings and for automatically feeding the same, so that the rings can be successively inserted by the successive operation of the aws.
'A further object of our improvements is to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in point of convenience, inexpensiveness, simplicity, effectiveness, and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective viewof a device embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a corresponding view showing the device open and in position for loading. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the jaw carrying the magazine or ring-receptacle. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the other jaw. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal central sectional view. Fig. 6 is a detail transverse sectional view taken on the line 11, Fig. 5. Figs. 7, 8, and
9 are detail sectional views taken, respectively, on the lines 7 7 and 8 8, Fig. 5.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A and B designate, respectively, the jaws of the device, which are provided with handles a b, and are pivotally connected together by a screw or pivot 0. Between the handles is mounted a suitable spring D, operating to normallyv retain the jaws in open position, the general construction and arrangement of the handles and spring and pivotal connections being substantially the same as usually employed. in this class of devices.
E designates a magazine or receptacle for the rings, which is provided upon the jaw A and may be in the mainof any suitable or 5 5 adapted shape or contour. The walls 2 of the receptacle conform to the shape of 'the rings (shown at F) and are preferably open at the front of the device, as shown at e. The reccptacle may be arranged to hold any desired number of rings and may conforin in shape to various sizes and forms of rings, as desired.
In the rear wall of the receptacle E is formed a segmental recess E, which is approximately cylindrical in cross-section and opens into the receptacle, as shown at e G designates a plate or plunger, which approximately conforms to the interior walls of the magazine or receptacle and is carried by a pin or rod H, which is accommodated in the recess E The plate G is provided at its rear edge with a projection g, accommodated in I the recess E, andis riveted or otherwise secured to the lower end h of the carrying-pin I H. This plate or plunger is adapted to retain. the rings in the receptacle and operate to antomatically force the rings successively into proper position in the jaws for clinching as the jaws are successively closed.
The pin or rod H is guided by and adapted to move vertically in a guide plate or bracket I, which projects laterally from the jaw A and has at its outer end anarm 'i at right angles to the projecting portion of the plate, provided with an eye or opening '5, through which the pin H passes and is adapted to slide. At its inner or bottom end the plate or bracket I is provided with an arm or extension '5 at right angles to its projecting portion, by which the plate is secured in position. This plate or 0 bracket I is centrally mounted over the recess E and is preferably secured in position by the pivot-pin or screw 0, as shown. Between the plate or plunger G and the outer arm t of the plate or bracket I is mounted a coiled '9 5 spring J, arranged upon the rod H and exerting its tension to carry the rod and the plunger G inwardly in the receptacle E.
Projecting inwardly at the bottom of one p of the sides or half-sections of the receptacle ro e E is a lip or flangt K, extending around said inner edge. Upon the'j aw B,which is adapted to work under the receptacle, is provided a corresponding lip or flange L, so that these flanges K and L conjointly form the bottom flange of the receptacle for supporting the To fill orload the receptacle or magazine with rings, the pin H and the plate G are pulled outwardly by means of a head or handle h upon the former, so that the plate G is withdrawn from the receptacle, when it maybe turned out of the way, as shown in Fig. 2. The rings can then be placed in the receptacle on top of each othen until the latter is filled, when the pin H is turned to bring the plunger-plate G into position for bearing upon the set of rings in the receptacle. The bottom ring will rest upon the lips or flanges K and L,
and the ring that is within the jaws can be clinched or closed by pressing the handles of the device. When the handles are returned to normal position by action of the spring D, th clinched or closed ring will be readily ej cted between the lips or flanges, as the rings in the magazine are automatically moved into successive position for clinching by the tension of the coiled spring J. The separation of the jaws to such an extent that the rings in the magazine would be dropped is prevented by the stop or shoulder M at the pivotal connection.
We claim as our invention ":1. Adevice of the class described, comprising the pivotally-connected jaws, one of which carries the magazine or receptacle provided at its bottom with'the projecting lip or flange and at its rear wall with the recess, the other jaw being provided with the corresponding lip or flange, the bracket or support upon the magazine j aw, the pin or rod mounted and operating in said bracket and accommodated in the recess, the plunger plate carried by said rod and adapted to slide in the receptacle, and the coiled-spring mounted upon the rod, substan tially as andfor the purpose set forth.

having the projecting bottom lip or flange, K, and the recess, E", in its rear wall; the jaw B being provided with the corresponding lip or flange, L; the bracket or support, I, mounted upon the jaw A; the pin or rod, H, sliding in said bracket and accommodated in the recess E; the plunger plate, G, carried by said pin and adapted to slide in the receptacle; and the coiled-spring, J, mounted upon the pin between the plunger plate and the bracket; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
: 3. A device of the class described,consisting of the pivotally-connected jaws having the spring-actuated handles and limiting stop or shoulder, one of the jaws carrying the magazinc or receptacle provided with the projecting bottom lip or flange and with the recess in its rear wall, the other jaw being provided with the corresponding projecting lip or flange, the bracket or support upon the magazine jaw, thepin or rod sliding in said bracket and accommodated in said recess, the plunger plate carried by said rod and sliding within the receptacle, and the spring actuating said rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A device of the class described, comprising thepivotally-connected jaws, one of which carries the magazine or receptacle having the projecting bottom lip or flange, the other jaw being provided with the corresponding projecting lip or flange, a bracket or support mounted upon the magazine jaw, and a springactuated rod carried by said bracket or support and carrying the plunger plate operating within the magazine or receptacle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
