Description

i f (Na mam.)
- s. P. DU BoIs.
I DUMPING WAGON. No. 550,864.
Patented Nov. 26, 1895.
n ll
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL P. DU BOIS, OF ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY.
DUMPING-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 550,364, dated November 26, 1895.
Application filed February 19, 1895. Serial No. 538,995. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. DU BoIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping VVag'ons and Carts, of which the following' is aspecification.
The object of this invention is to produce usefulimprovements in dumping wagons and carts, particularly those used for hauling and dumping garbage.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the cover or lid may be held suspended while the body is lowered or tilted to dump the contents.
IVith these andother objects in view the invention consists in the various novel details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, whereby a strong, durable, efficent, and comparatively inexpensive garbage-cart is produced, the construction to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing` the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying' drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a cart embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 longitudinal sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of a section of the body and lid.
In the drawings, 1 dcnotes the shafts, 2 the axle, and 3 the Wheels, which may be of any ordinary construction. The body 4 is of metal, having a square front end and a rounded rear end, inclined, as shown at 5, for the purpose heretofore eXplained. Centrally of the body at the top is a cross-piece 6, to which are hinged the covers or lids 7 7, which are provided with downtu'rned edges 8, forming fianges which fit snugly around the body. Curved arms 9 are secured to the rear body and are provided with angular extensions 10 at their free ends, which abut the end of the shaft (or a block 11 may be secured on the shaft) when the rear end of the is aV body udescends. The action of this arm holds the rear cover suspended while the body falls to its predetermined position for dumping its contents, and as the body returns to its normal position it receives the lid, as will be obvious.
Secured to the shaft on one side is a gearw wheel 12, mounted to mesh with a similar gear-wheel 13, keyed to a rod 14. This rod 14= is provided with curved arms 15, having a longitudinal slot 16, in which a pin or stud 17, secured to the side of the body will ride. Thus as the crank 18 of the wheel 12 is turned -the guides Will be elevated or lowered, carrying the body, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2. The guides formed by the staples 19 and 20 receive the arms 21 and 9, respectively.
The construction, operation, and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the foregoing description, it being understood and noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim is---l 1. The combination with a cart and its body, of a lid hinged to cover the top thereof, an arm abutting` a stop and connected to the lid, and means for tilting the body, as and 'for the purpose described.
2. In a garbage cart,'the combination of its body, a lid hinged thereto to cover the top, an arm secured to the top, means for tilting the body and a stop block against which the arm abuts when the body is tilted, as and for the purpose specifie'd.
3. In combination, the body of a garbage cart, a lid hinged to cover the top, a curved arm secured to the lid and having an angular extension, a stop block arranged on the end of the shaft against which the arm abuts, when the body is tilted, andmeans for tilting the body, as and for the purpose specified.l
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL P. DU BOIS.
