UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
JULES PIERRE ELIE NIOLAUSSE AND ALBERT GEORGES LOUIS NICLAUSSE,
' OF PARIS, FRANCE.
METALLIC JOINT FOR BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,350, dated November 26, 1895.
Application filedllugust 27,1895. Serial No. 560,649. (No model.) Patented in France May 18, 1893, No. 230,166, and in EnglandMay 20,1893,N0.10,136.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J ULEs PIERRE ELIE NroLAUssE and ALBERT GEoReEs LoUIs NIC- LAU SSE, citizens of France, residing at Paris,
France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Joints for Boilers and other Apparatus, (for which we have obtained French Letters Patent No. 230,166, dated May 18, 1893, and English Letters Pat- :0 ent No. 10,136, dated May 20, 1893;) and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of our invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention has relation to a metallic joint for boilertubes and other apparatus, and
in such connection it relates more particularly to the construction and arrangement of such a joint.
The principal objects of our invention are,
2 5 first, to provide a tight j ointbetween a boilertube and two or more parallel plates supporting the same, and, second, to provide a boiler-tube having formed on its periphery conical shoulders, one or more of which is or 0 are elastic and adapted to be forced into the openings of the parallel plates supporting said tube to establish a tight joint at those places.
Our invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts designated to 3 5 carry into effect the above-mentioned objects,
substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of our invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a cross-section taken through two parallel plates of a boiler and a tube secured therein, the tube embodying main features of our invention; and Fig. 2 is a simi-' lar View of a slightly-modified form of tube with our invention applied thereto.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a tube or any piece of substantially-cylindrical form, and C and D represent two parallel plates or walls of a section of a boiler. On the end of the tube Ais formed at one end a conical flange, collar, or shoulder a, which is hollowed internally to make the same thin and elastic. On the tube A, and at a distance from the shoulder a slightly less than the distancebetween the two walls 0 and D, is located another conical flange, collar, or shoulder 1), which, when not established with an open end of the tube, is by preference made solid and inelastic. When the tube is driven to place, the elastic cone or will take its bearing first and will yield until the solid cone 1) has taken its bearings, when both joints will become tight.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 2 the tube A is open at both ends and the conical shoulders or and b are both elastic. In thisconstruction, if in consequence either of the soarfing or the effects of expansion there exists a slight difference in the length of two tubes between the plates, there will nevertheless be formed a tight joint at either of the cones a or b. 5
The tube illustrated in Fig. l is slightly tapered near the end carrying the flexible cone a, in order not to increase the diameter of the hole in the plate when the space between the different holes does not allow of the size of these holes being larger than the tubes.
In both forms shown the conical shoulders point or taper in the same direction.
Having thus described the nature and obj ects of our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with two or more perforated parallel boiler plates, a tube adapted to be inserted in the perforations of said plates, the exterior of said tube being provided with conical bearing shoulders corresponding in number with said plates, one or more of said shoulders being flexible and the taper of all the shoulders extending in the same direction, substantially as described.
2. In combination with two parallel perforated boiler plates, a tube adapted to be inserted in the perforations of said plates and having on its exterior at one end a flexible conical bearing shoulder and provided at a mo distance therefrom slightly less than the distance between said plates with an external fixed conical shoulder, said shoulders adapted to be driven into the perforations of said plates and the flexible shoulder adapted to enter its perforation before the solid shoulder, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JULES PIERRE ELIE NICLAUSSE.
ALBERT GEORGES LOUIS NICLAUSSE. W'itnesses:
