PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK SARGENT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
EXPANSION CONNECTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1; 1920.
Application filed October-20, 1914, Serial No. 867,628. Renewed September 22, 1917. Serial No. 192,827.
a simple, reliable, durable and comparatively inexpensive device of the kind described adapted to prevent the possibility of leakage under substantially any conditions of temperature or service.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and com bination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like or similar reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a surface condenser equipped with my improved connections with parts removed and broken away to more clearly show the construction.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of my improved connection and associated parts.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a slightly modified construction of my connection.
In the drawings for the purpose of illustration my device is shown in connection with a surface condenser for forming a fluid tight flexible connectionbetween the heads of the condenser and the tubes.
As shown 1 is the condenser shell of the usual or any preferred form or construction provided with suitable heads or tube sheets 22 near each end adapted'to jointly receive and support the tubes 33 between them in substantially the usual manner.
My improvement consists of means for. securing the ends of the several tubes to the I heads or tube sheets to form a fluid tight connection between them and allow the free expansion of the tubes in relation to the heads. For this purpose my improved expansion connection may be employed at one end-only of a tube, the opposite end of thea tube being expanded into or otherwise rigidly attached to the head, or my'improved tubes or other expansible members and the heads or other fixed part of a device. As shown each opening for a tube in the heads 2 is provided with a shoulder 4 intermediate its ends and the inner portion 5 of each opening is formed to snugly fit the tube cooperating with it while the outer portion 6 is considerably larger with suitable screw threads formed in its wall adapted to cooperate with an externally threaded sleeve 7.
The sleeve 7 is preferably bored slightly larger than the tube 3 and the inner end of the member 10 is soldered or otherwise secured within the sleeve to form a fluid tight joint between the head and member. As shown the outer end of the sleeve 7 is provided with suitable notches 8 or other convenient means for engaging the sleeve to screw the same into the part 6 of the opening. The part 10 is provided with a lateral flange 9 at its inner end adapted to be engaged between the inner end of the sleeve 7 and the face of the shoulder 4 to form a conveniently detachable fluid tight joint between the extensible member 10 and the head. The outer end of the member 10 is rigidly secured to the projecting end of the tube 3 as at 11 by soldering, Welding or.
other convenient means adapted to permanently attach the member to the tube and form a fluid tight connection between them.
Any suitable means may be provided to secure longitudinal flexibility for the member 10. p In the form shown the tube 3 projects slightly beyond the outer end of the sleeve 7 and the part of the member 10 outside the sleeve 7 is provided with a plurality of transverse corrugations 12 extending from the outer end of the sleeve substantially to the connection 11. The length of the corrugated portion 12 depends in each case upon the amount of movement desired or necessary betweenthe tube and the head 2.
In the form shown in Fig. 3 the sleeve 14 is preferably slightly larger in diameter than in the previously described form and its internal diameter is of sufficient size to receive and inclose the corrugated portion 17 of the longitudinally extensible member 18. The head 15 and shoulder 16 remain,
\joint is substantially as hereinbefore described.- In this form however the tube 19 may be made considerably shorter or if'desired, the corrugated portion 17 of the extensible member may be increased in length, in each form however the operation is very similar to the form hereinbefore described and an absolutely fluid tight flexible and expansible provided adapted to provide for any amount of expansion between the head of the tube, thus doing away with the diificulties encountered in surface condensers and other devices wherein the several parts are subject to considerable expansion or where the expansion of the parts is not uniform thus causing straining and leakage.
Having thus described my improvement it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be madev in my device without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form or construction shown.
What I claim as new and by Letters Patent is:
1, In a device of the. kll'i d described, a plate having a shouldered opening, and a tube extending into said opening, in combination with a longitudinally flexible member having one end permanently attached to said tube adjacent the end thereof and substantially constituting a unitary structure, said member having its other end extended into said opening, and means for connecting said last mentioned end of said member to the wall of said opening to form a fluid desire to secure tight joint between said plate and tube.
2. In a device of the kind described, a plate having an opening-and a tube extending into and through said opening, in combination with a longitudinally flexible member having one end permanently attached to said tube adjacent the end thereof to substantially provide a unitary structure and having its opposite end extended into said opening, and means for-connecting said last mentioned end of said member to the walls of said opening to form a fluid tight joint between said plate .and tube.
3. In a device of the kind described, a plate having a shouldered opening and a tube extending into said opening, in combination with a longitudinally flexible mem ber having one end permanently attached to said tube to substantially provide a unitary structure and provided with a flange at its opposite end positioned in said opening and overlying said. shoulder and means for clamping said flange against the shoulder in said opening to form a fluid tight connection thereat.
4. In a device of the ldnd described, a plate having an opening therethrough, a shoulder formed in the Walls of said opening intermediate its ends, the opening being larger at one side of said shoulder than at the opposite side thereof and a tube extending into said opening and through the smaller portion thereof, in combination with a longitudinally flexible member inclosing a portion of said tube and haying one end permanently attached thereto and substantially constituting therewith a unitary structure, a flange at the opposite end of said member positioned in said opening and adapted to cooperate with said shoulder and means extending into the larger portion of said opening for clamping said flange to said shoulder to form a fluid tight connection between said plate and tube.
5. In a device of the kind described, a plate having an opening therethrough, a shoulder formed in the walls of said opening intermediate the ends, the opening being larger at one side of said shoulder than at the opposite side thereof and a tube extending into said opening and through the smaller portion thereof, in combination with a longitudinally flexible member inclosing a portion of said tube and having one of its ends permanently attached to the tube adjacent the end thereof, said member having a flange at its opposite end positioned in said opening and adapted to cooperate with said shoulder and a separable annular member extending into the larger portion of said opening and engaging the walls thereof to ,lock said member in position for clamping said flange to said shoulder to form a fluid tightconnection between said plate and tube. ,In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two sub-.
scribing witnesses.
