UNITED STAT-Es PATENT OFFICE. u
HENRY C. JOHNSON, OF OAMDEN, ARKANSAS.
COFFEE-ROASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,275, dated November 26, 1895. Application led May 1'7, 1895. Serial No. 549,644. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY C. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oamden, in the county of Ouachita and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coffee-Roasters and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a newly-invented coffeeroaster; and it consists of a hollow cylinder having in its periphery an opening closed by a door resting between two flanges, of Z- shaped perforated end plates secured to the heads of said roaster, and of a forked handle having its ends so journaled in the perforations of said Z-plates that the drum may be rolled onlyhalf way over, thus never allowing the opening in the drum to be turned under while the process of roasting is going on.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view. Fig. 3 is an end view. Figs. 4 and 5 are details.
My invention is described as follows: A is the drum, composed of a sheet of metal B. The edges of said sheet are turned in, forming flanges c. The heads D are perfect circles, except at the points d', and are fitted in the ends of the coil-sheet B, leaving an opening d2 in said drum. On the outer face of each head D is set the Z-shaped perforated end plates e, so that the perforations e' in each piece are exactly in the center of said end plates. E is the handle, which consists of a heavy piece of wire bent part of the way double, then turning out at right angles, forming the arms e2, then forward, forming the arms e3, then out, forming the pinions e4, which pass through the perforations e of the pieces e. Vhen the roller is pulled forward, the arm e3 impinges against the rear edge e5 of the plate e, and when it is pushed backward it impinges against the edge e6 of said plate, (see Fig. 5,) thus preventing the drum from making more than half a revolution and thus preventing the opening d2 from ever going under. Said opening cl2 is vclosed by a door F. Said door is composed of one sheet of metal f and a rod f constructed as follows: Out of each corner of the sheet f a piece of metal is cut, and then the sides are turned down, forming flanges f2, and then the ends are turned up, forming upper flanges f3, and then these flanges are perforated, and in said ,perforations is secured a rod f', which acts as a handle. The flanges f2 when inserted in the Opening d2 impinge against the flanges c, and thus said door is held in place.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
l. The combination of the cylindrical bent sheet B, having the inturned flanges c; circular heads D, fitting in the ends of the sheet B; perforated Z-shaped end plates e, secured on the router faces of said head pieces, their perforations e, being immediately in the center of said head pieces; handle E, having its bent ends e4, journaled in the perforations e', of said plates e, and lying between the heads and plates, so that said drum cannot be revolved more than half way round; and door F, adapted to iit in the opening d2, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the cylindrical bent sheet B, having the inturned flanges c; door F, consisting of the up -turned perforated anges f3; rod f', secured in said perforations; and flanges f2, adapted to engage the flanges c, of the sheet B; and handle E, having its ends journaled in suitable bearings secured to the heads of the drum, so that their perforations are immediately in the center of said heads, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. HENRY C. J OHNSON.
