' EGG-TESTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,179, dated November 19, 1895.

Be it known that we,l JAMES M. KIEHLE and `JULIUS W. NEEFE, citizens of the United States, residing at Ooudersport, in the county of Potter and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Egg-Tester, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to egg-testers, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of the class named, by means of which a number of eggs may be tested at the same time, and whereby the eggs are held in a favorable position for viewing them in the line of their major axes; and furthermore, to provide a cabinet in connection with the tester for storing eggs in quantity.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

`In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an egg-tester constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view ,taken from the rear. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a tester having a single angular rest, the section being taken through a seat. Fig. 4t is a front view of a portion of the tester, showing one of'the seats.A Fig. 5 is a plan view of a portion of the tester, showing one of the seats.

l designates a casing provided with a stepped front side constructed of a series of angular rests 2, each rest consisting of a horizontal side or wall 3 and a vertical side or wall 4, which intersect, preferably, at a right angle to each other, and in each of the said rests is formed a series of egg-seats 5. rlhe rear side 6 of the tester is provided with a hinged door or flap 7, having an inspectionopening 8. The lower portion of the casing forms a receptacle 9 for eggs previous or subsequent to testing. p

The egg-seats are outwardly liared or beveled to correspond approximately with the curvature of the surfaces of eggs', and the seat consists of registering-openings v 10 and 11, formed, respectively, in the horizontal and vertical sides or walls of the rests. The opening 11, which is formed in the vertical side or wall of the rest, is arched, with the spring of the arch in the plane of the upper surface of the horizontal side orwall 3, and the opening 10, which is formed in the horizontal side or wall, is segmental in construction and eX- ceeds a semicircle in extent. Hence the mouth of the opening 10, which registers with the lower end of the opening 1l, is less than a diameter of the opening lO.

rIhe eggs are place in and approximatelyhorizontal position in the seats, with their points projecting inward through the openings ll and their butts resting on the beveled edges of the openings 10, thereby practically filling the openings and excluding light from the interior of the casing, and the operator, by viewing the eggs through the inspectionopening 8 in the rear side of the cabinet, may see at a glance the condition of all of the eggs arranged in the seats.

Various changes in the form, proportion,-

and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having described our invention, what we claim isl. An egg tester having a cabinet provided at one side with a series of angular rests having openings to form egg-seats and provided in the opposite side with an inspection opening, substantially as specified.

2. An egg tester having a casing provided at one side with angular rests, and egg-seats formed in the angles of said rests and consisting of registering openings formed in the angularly disposed sides or walls thereof, said casing being provided in the opposite side with an inspection opening, substantially as specified.

3.
