AUTOMATIC CINDER AND DUST ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,165, dated November 19, 1895. Application fil d Januaryl8, 1894. Renewed April 22, 1895. Serial No. 550,236. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ELsASsER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Cinder and Dust Ari-esters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in an automatic cinder and dust arrester, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings and the objects of my invention are to provide an attachment for sleeping and railway passenger car windows which will prevent the cinders and dust from entering same when windows are open and the car is in motion. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and2 are side views. Fig. 3is a vertical section of a car-window. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of car-window, showing arrester in position.

In the drawings, 1 represents body of car.
2 is the window-sash.
3 is a rod or bar placed-in a vertical position, which may be constructed of any desired material-such as brass, steel, or iron. The length of the rod or bar is the same as the height of the window-frame, and it is held in position by rests or pivots 5, which may be concealed under the top and bottom of window-facing.
The rod or bar 3 is provided with a groove or slot 4., starting about four inches from the bottom of same, and running up about two inches, making a quarter-turn to right or left, and thencontinuing three-fourths of the entire length of the bar; and the cinder-boards 6 are rigidly attached to the rods or bars 3. Placed upon each side of the sash are pins 7 which travel in the slots 4.-. The normal po=- sition of the cinder-boards when not in use is against the sides of a car, but when the sash is raised they occupy the position shown in Fig. 4.
In practice the passenger, upon raising the window, sets the cinder-boards without the aid of a porter or assistant, as the pins 7, which rest in grooves 4, commence to act themoment the window is raised, and will cause a quarter motion of the bars 3 to the right or left, which will cause the cinder-boards to move at a right angle from the car-window, thus preventing the cinders and dust from entering the windows of the car when in motion. The cinder-board works automatically upon raising the sash, and is set without trouble.
The use of double cinder-boards is preferable, as the cinder-board in front of the open window arrests the cinders and the one in the rear prevents the return of cinders and dust into the cars through the open window, caused by the whirl or suction of the wind when the cars are in rapid motion.
A striking advantage of my invention is its economical construction and eifective manner in which the same may be operated. Having described my invention and the manner in which the same is or may be operated, I would say in conclusion that I do not limit myself to the precise details shown in illustration, as the same may be varied to some extent; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A dust arrester for car windows consisting of a cinder board, a pivot rod for the same having a slot or groove, and a projection upon the window sash working in the slot or groove as described, so that when the sash is raised the cinder board is thrown at right angles to the side of the car, and when the sash is lowered the board is thrown back parallel with the side of the car, as and for the purpose set forth.
