INSULATED PIPE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,097, dated November 19, 1895.

To all whom 216 may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND E. CLIFT, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Insulated Pipe-Couplings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is certain improvements in couplings for electroliers which can be used to couple a combined gas and electric fixture to the main gas-pipe, and the particular purpose of my improvement is to make a flrm and insulated coupling-one in which the parts will remain in proper position with reference to each other under shocks and jars and be properly insulated from each other at all times.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an outside view of my coupling. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of my coupling. Figs. 3, 5, 7 and 9, respectively, are sectional views of parts A, B, O, and D Figs. 4, 6, 8, and 10 are respectively outside views of parts A, B, O, and D of coupling.
A is a cap adapted by means of the internal thread a to be secured to the gassupply pipe. This cap has the projecting flange a and depending flange a The depending flange a has its exterior threaded. B is a casing, on the top of which the flange a of cap A rests, and has its interior at the top threaded, with which the threads on the flange a mesh. On the Ipwer portion of this casing is the shoulder G is a metallic pipe placed at its upper end to conform to size of orifice of cap A and having a narrower orifice at its lower portion. Intermediate upon this pipe 0 is the flange or shoulder c. The height of the pipe from the broad end to the shoulder is equal to the distance from the top of easing B to shoulder 17, so that when said pipe is Within the casing the shoulder c rests upon the shoulder 19 and the top of pipe 0 is approximately in line with the top of easing B, and when the cap A is meshed with the casing Bfit rests against the top of said pipe 0. Between the shoulder b and shoulder c is placed insulating material I K, preferably mica disks, and between the top of pipe 0 and cap A is placed insulating material F, preferably mica disks. The exterior lower end of this pipe 0 is threaded.
D is the bottom piece, haying an internal screw-thread meshing with the threaded end of pipe (3, and also has an internal inset d and a projecting flange D", adapted to rest against the bottom of easing B. Between bottom of easing B and flange D is placed insulatin g material, preferably mica disks E. The lower end of bottom piece D is connected to the eleotrolier. If desired, the electrolier may be connected directly to the pipe 0.
G is a disk, preferably of porcelain, through an orifice in which pipe 0 passes and insulating the pipe 0 from inner surface of shoulder b. Cement is placed in the space between the pipe 0 and inner wall of easing B.
The lower end of pipe 0, if bottom piece D be used, is enlarged to upset into the inset cl of piece D. The bottom piece D may be externally instead of internally threaded. With this construction of coupling great simplicity is obtained, and the pipe 0 is held rigidly and fixedly in position when the cap is screwed into the casing.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an insulated coupling, the combina tion of a casing having an internal shoulder, a pipe within said casing having an external flange adapted to rest on said shoulder, a cap having threaded portion adapted to mesh with and be secured to the casing and rest upon said pipe, and insulating material between said pipe and the cap, and between the flange and the shoulder, the lower end of said pipe being threaded, a bottom piece threaded, adapted to mesh with the threaded end of said pipe, and provided with a flange and insulating material between said. flange and the easmg.
2. In an insulating coupling, the combination of a casing having an internal shoulder, a pipe Within said casing having an external flange adapted to rest on said shoulder, a cap having threaded portion adapted to mesh with and be secured to the casing and rest upon said pipe, and insulating material between too said pipe and the cap, and between the flange and shoulder, the lower end of said pipe bein g threaded, a bottom pieee threaded, adapted to mesh with the threaded end of said pipe, and provided with a flange and insulating material between said flange and the casing, a porcelain ring beneath the shoulder of easing through an orifice in which the said pipe passes.
3. In an insulated coupling, the combination of a casing having an internal shoulder, a pipe within said casin g having an external flange adapted to rest on said shoulder, a cap having threaded portion adapted to mesh with and be secured to the casing and rest upon said pipe, and insulating material between said pipe and the cap, and between the flange and shoulder, the lower end of said pipe being threaded, a bottom piece threaded, adapted to mesh with the threaded end of said pipe, and provided with a flange and insulatin g material between said flange and the easing, a porcelain ring between the shoulder of easing through an orifice in which the said pipe passes, and cement between said pipe and the inner wall of the casing above said shoulder.
