CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,806, dated November 12, 1895. Application filed September 4, 1895. Serial No. 561,407. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MooDY M. iWIAsrnv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hicksville, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghurns, 'of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to churns, and has for its object to provide an improved mechanism of the reciprocating doubledasher type for agitating the contents of the churn, which will by reason of its improved construction not only reciprocate the dashers in the bottom of the churn, but will at the same time impart to the dasher-rods and dashers an independent vertical movement in the churn. This object I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a churn with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the dashers and dasher-rods and their driving mechanism; and Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section of the dasher-rods, taken on the line 00 00, Fig. 1, for showing the guide for said rods.
In the said drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the body of the churn, formed of a number of vertical staves in the usual manner, and having the removable top 2 centrally apertured to permit the passage of the dasher-rods.
I prefer to form two of the staves 3 on opposite sides of the churn considerablylcnger than the rest, to provide suitable bearings for the dasher-rod-driving mechanism, as will be hereinafter explained. These two staves are extended up above the top 2 and are provided at their upper ends with suitable bearings 4 to receive a crank-shaft 5, as shown. This crank-shaft has mounted on one end a flywheel 6, having a suitable handle 7 thereon for rotating the same. The shaft is provided with two cranks 8, whichI have shown as located outside the bearings 4:, but which may, if desired, be located between said bearings. I also provide on said shaft an eccentrically, mounted sprocket-wheel 9, for a purpose hereinafter described.
Located in vertical guide-slots 10 in the staves or supports 3, and below the crankshaft 5, is another crankshaft 11. I This shaft is freely movable vertically in said guideslots, the latter being provided with suitable wear-plates 12, as shown, to receive the wear from the shaft 11 in its vertical movement therein. Connecting the cranks 8 of the shaft 5 with the ends of the shaft 11 are the straps 13. The shaft 11 is also provided with a sprocket-wheel 14, preferably smaller in diameter than the wheel 9, and connected thereto by the sprocket-chain 15, as shown. The shaft 11 isalso formed with the double cranks 16 at its center to receive the upper ends of the connecting-rods 17 of the dasherrods 18 in the usual manner. These dasherrods extend down into the churn and have fixed to their lower ends suitable dashers 19, as shown. I also prefer to providea suitable guide 20 for said rods, the same consisting of a'casting having two apertures therein to receive the dasher-rods, and having tapped into one side a set-screw 21 for forming a means of connection with one of the dasher-rods, as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing description the operation ofiny dvice will be understood to be as follows. The churn being filled with cream,by rotating the fly-wheel 6 a bodily vertical movement will be imparted to the crank-shaft 11 and its attached dasher-rods and dashers through the cranks 8 and straps 13. At the same time by the rotation of the shaft 5 the eccentric sprocket-wheel 9 will also be rotated and will, through the sprocket-chain 15 and wheel 14, impart an independent rotary movement to the "crank-shaft 11, which, through the cranks 16, will vertically reciprocate the dasher-rods and dashers in the usual manner. By making the sprocket-wheel 14 smaller than the sprocket-wheel 9 I impart a more rapid rotary movement to the shaft 11 than to the shaft 5, and this relative size of the sprocketwheels may be varied as desired. It will thus be seen that the vertical movement of the shaft 11 will bodily raise and lower the dasher-rods and dashers, while the quicker rotary movement of said shaft will at the same time impart to said rods and dashers a rapid reciprocating movement, the combined movement affording a means for thoroughly agitating the contents of every part of the churn.
I have described the supports for the operating mechanism as consisting of the extended staves 3 5 but it will be understood that I do not limit myself to such construction, as any suitable supports maybe employed which may be attached to the churn-body in any suitable manner.
By mounting the sprocket-wheel 9 eccentric on the shaft 5 I provide ameans for equalizing the difference in the distance between the shafts 5 and 11 during the revolution of the former, so that the chain 15 will always remain taut between its two sprocket-wheels.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a churn, the combination with the churn body, and suitable dashers, of means for imparting to the latter a vertical reciprocating movement with respect to each other and also a combined vertical reciprocating movement with respect to the churn body, substantially as described.
2. In a churn, the combination with the churn body, and suitable dashers, of means for imparting to the latter a vertical reciprocating movement with respect to each other and also a slower combined vertical reciprocating movement with respect to the churn, substantially as described.
3. In a churn, the combination with the churn body, and suitable dashers therein, of mechanism for operating said dashers consisting of two crank shafts, intermediate mechanism for connecting the cranks of one shaft with the dashers, and means for imparting a recip- 4:. In a churn, the combination with the churn body, dashers in said churn body, a crank shaft, and intermediate mechanism for connecting the dashers with the cranks of said shaft, of a second crank shaft, straps connecting the cranks of said shaft with the ends of the dasher shaft, sprocket wheelsmountcd on said shafts one of them being mounted eccentric to its shaft, a connecting sprocket chain between said wheels, and means for rotating the second crank shaft, substantially as described.
5. In a churn, the combination of a churn body, upper and lower crank shafts mounted in supports attached to the churn body the lower shaft being vertically movable, dasher rods connected to the cranks of the lower shaft, dashers on the lower ends of said rods, straps connecting the cranks of the upper shaft with the body portion of the lower shaft, an eccentrically mounted sprocket wheel on the upper shaft, a sprocket wheel on the lower shaft, a sprocket chain connectingthc two wheels, and means for rotating the upper shaft, substantially as described.
