SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 549,633, dated November 12, 1895. Application tiled September 16, 1896. Serial No. 562,665. (No modeld To all wit-0111, it nmg concern:
lie it known that I, HUGH DONLEY, of Cannelton, iii-the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Car-Coupler, of which the following is a specification. 'l, his ,4 invention relates,generally, to car- (fOil[)l( il'S,zlll l part icula rly to that class thereof known as the .lanney type; and the objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved form of. pinoperating mechanism; secondly, to provide improved means for a utomatically throwing the knuckle outward when the pin is raised to unlock said knuckle. With these objects in view the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the several parts and the novel manner of combining or arranging the1n,such as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.

In carrying out my invention I employ the draw-head A, which in general contour is substantially the "same as the draw-head of the ordinary Janneycoupler-tlmt is,it comprises the rigid ,jaw 14 and the movable knuckle a. and by referring to Fig. '7 it will. be seen that said lever comprises a l'orwardl v-curved nut; d and lug d at the rear end, which lug has acurved oibeveled l'a-ce d for a purpose presently described, and the. enlarged port ion (1, through. which the pivotal bolt passes. in order to pivotally secure said lcvcr wit hin. the recess in the draw-head. The pin 0 is formed with a curved or slop-' ing edge 0", which engages the curved or beveled face (7, of the lug II, so'that as said pin is raised the curved surfaces will engage each other, the rearend ot' the knuckle-opening lever-rod forced inward and the forward end thrown outward, and as said rod seats, in a recess a, formed in the knuckle, said knuckle will be thrown open and the car will be ready for eouplin In order to render the operation of the lever quicker and easier, l form the knuckle with a curved boss aflwhieh contacts with a curved portion (Z of the knuckle-openi ng' lever, whereby t he purchase or bearing surface between the knuckle and lever is increased.
In order to permit. the insertion of the peculiar-shaped pin the draw-head is const rnct ed with a siniilarly-shaped opening, and in order to close the said opening at the upper end. I employ a cap-piece or block Ii, which is held in place by apivotal bolt of the knuckleopening lever and completely covers the opening in the drmv-hea-d; and I further utilize this block or cap-piece and make it actas a stop for the pin byplacing a horizontal lug or finger hin the side of the pin t, which lug or finger engages the bottom of the cap-piece or block ll, and thus limits the upward movementof the pin C.
By means of the peculiar arrangement of thclevers E and F located in the shoulder, the movement of the pin is rendered quick and certain, and the quickness of said pin serves to positively actuate the knuckle-openin g lever, so that it will be seen that I provide a car-coupling embodying these automatic features, which will operate in a wholly cilicient andflsatisfactory manner.
Havingthus described my invention, what I. claim a'snenxand desireto secure by Letters Patent,
I. In a coupling of the class described, the combination, with the d raw-head, and knuckle, ot' the eouplin; pin, the operat ingleve'rs arranged within the draw-bu r, and the lifting rod for operating said levers, substantially as shown and described.
9. In a coupling; of the class described, the combination with the drmv-banztnd head, and knuckle, olf the coupling pin, the levers E, and F, arranged within the draw-bar, and the lifting rod G, for operating the said levers, substantially as shown and. described.
3. In a coupling of the class described, the combi nat ion,with the d raw-heathot the knuckle, having the rear end of its locking arm beveled or-curved, and a recess or seat upon the inner face of said locking arm, andthe boss or enlargement adjacent to said recess or seat, the uncoupling lever having a curved forward end, and the beveled lug at the rear end, and the coupling, pin having a square upper end, a flat lower end with intermediate locking shoulder, an inclined. operating surface, said locking shoulderadapted to engage the locking arm of the knuckle, and the inclined surface being adapted to engage the beveled or curved lug of the opening lever, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a coupling of the class deseri bed, the combination, with a coupling pin, having square upper end, and flat lower portions'ot' the cap'orbloek ll, and the lug or finger 7:, all arranged and adapt-ed to operate substantially as shown and described.
