SAN D-COLLAR FOR WAGON-AXLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,379, dated November 5, 1895.

Be it known that I, TARGE G. MANDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Collar Skeins for Wagon-Axles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View of a thimbleskein cast integral with my improved sand or mud collar. Fig. 2 is a plan of the under side of the skein and collar, showing more clearly the enlarged bottom liange of the latter with its oblique Scrapers or cleaners. Fig. 3 is a sectional View, on a vertical plane, through the middle of the aXle, skein, and hub, showing the relative positions of the sand-band on the hub and sand-collar on the skein; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the latter from the side facing the hub.

Like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention relates to sand-collars or mudcollars for vehicle-axles; and it consists in the combination, with the hub and its sand-band, of a thimble-skein cast withl a recessed or chambered collar of gradually-increasing width toward the bottom, where it is provided with a central recess or depression, forming oblique flanges, which operate as Scrapers or cleaners for the sand-band on the hub, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

On'the accompanying drawings the referenceletter A designates a portion of the axle, C the axle-skein or thimble-skein, and B the hub, which is provided on its inner side or face with the usual circular concentric inwardly-projecting flange or sand-band b.

Cast upon and in one piece with the thimble-skeinC is a concentric collar D, having on one side a straight flat or smooth face c at right angles to the axis of the skein, but recessed on the opposite side, so as to form an annular chamber d with an eccentric outwardly-projecting overlapping flange e of gradually-increasing width toward the under side, as shown at e, a recess or depression in the flange being made on the under side, where this is of its maximum width, as shown at f, said recess having oblique side shoulders or offsets g g, so that the recess f flares outwardly fromthe inner face of the hub. The operation of this chambered and recessed collar D, in conjunction with the thimble-skein O, of which it forms an integral part, and in combination with the hub B and concentric sand-band b, is as follows: Any sand or mud that collects or is caught upon the axle and skein is not only prevented from entering the aXle-boX (shown at a) by the collar D, but the overlapping flange e e of this will deflect the mud and dirt so as to throw it out of the annular chamber d as it gradually collects therein, and if, perchance, any dirt should find its way through the narrow circular space between the collar-ange e e' and the adjacent side of the overlapping sand-band b it will be cut loose and carried out of the said space by the flaring offsets or flanges g g, which thus effectually clear the sand-band of all dirt that may accumulate therein. The object in increasing the width of the collar-flange e at the bottom recess f is to make said iiange at this point wide or broad enough to carry the dirt out beyond the rim of the revolving sandband.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. As an improved article of manufacture, a thimble-skein C cast with the integral collar D having annular chamber d, an eccentric outwardly projecting overlapping flange e of gradually increasing width toward the bottom; and provided with the bottom-recess f having flaring side-flanges or offsets g g; substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth. l
