UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. FULTON, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA. l
SAN D-BAN-D F'oR wAeoNs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,538, dated November 6, 1894.
Application inea May' 5. 189s.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern/f Be it known that I, JAMES A. FULTON, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph, in the State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sand-Bands for Wagons and other Vehicles; and I declare thatthe following is a full and accurate description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is longitudinal section of the skein and hub, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a Fig. 3 is an end view ofthe same. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a portion of the hub with another form of my invention applied thereto. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the skein with another form of collar from that shown in Fig. l.
The object of my invention is to prevent dirt and sand from entering between the axle and hub and thereby causing the box and skein to be rapidly worn out. I am aware that others have made devices for the saine purpose, but so far as I know no one has fashioned a device substantially like and so simple and effective as mine.
As the wheel revolves sand and dirt are carried up clinging to the felly and tire. This is especially true when the road is wet. The sand or dirt so carried up is liable to, and does drop off the tire or felly upon the hub and some of it, unless prevented by some device for the purpose, will find its way into the space between the end of the hub and the shoulder of the axle and thence into the hub where it tends to grind away the surfaces of the box and skein, and greatly increases the labor of the draft animals.
My invention consists of a projecting annular ledge on the end of the hub and a band containing a groove, affixed to the axle or skein in such position as will be suitable to receive and inclose the said projecting ledge and thereby arrest any sand or dirt which may fall uponsaid ledge, which I denominate a sand band, and prevent the same from Iinding its way into the hub.
A is an ordinary wagon or carriage hub and B is the axle or skein on which said wheel revolves.
E is the sand bandvor ledge, projectingv serai No. 473.058. (No mtas.)
from the end of the hub parallel with and con@ centric to the axle.
The band E may be made and attached in many ways. In the drawings, Fig l, it is represented as a cylindrical ring one edge of which is embedded in the hub. This method would not be convenient if the hub were made of metal and it would then be made with provision for attachment by means of screws or otherwise. (See Fig. 4.)
The band or ledge E is suiiiciently wide to project beyond the joint G, between the end of the hub and the shoulder ot' the axle, and to arrest any sand or dirt which may fall oft' the end ot' the hub, and prevent itfrom tinding its way between the hub and skein.
The skein or axle B is provided with a collar C, which may be made integral with said skein or axle, or made separate therefrom to be attached in any suitable Way. In Figs. 3 and 5 it is shown with an orifice D, to admit the skein. On its outer side or face said collar is provided with a groove F formed by a housing H which extends over the top of the skein and about halt way down either side as shown in Fig. 3. The housing H serves to arrest any sand or mud which falls beyond the hub, and prevents any such dirt from reaching the sand band at all except such as` may pass down through the outer part of the joint G; The upper surface ot' the housing H and the lower surface of the groove F slope away'from the joint G so that any sand or dirt which falls oi the sand band into said groove will tend to keep away from said joint G. The motion of the sand band through said groove will also tend to brush said sand or airt out at the open end of said groove, and this tendency will be made more positive by slight ribs I, on the inner side of said band, said ribs being oblique to the plane of rotation, so that any matter acted upon by said ribs will be pushed away from the joint G, as well as toward the open end of the groove.
That part which I have called al housing H may be integral with or separate from the collar.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The hub A provided with aledge or sand band E, combined with an axle or skein B IAO provided with a sand grooveF` extending part said band E, the said band being provided Way around said skein, the said band E be- With the inclined rib or ribs I, substantially ing provided with the ribs I, as and for the as set forth.
purposes set forth. JAMES A. FULTON. 5 2. The hub A provided with a. ledge or sand Vitnesses:
band E, combined with an axle or skein B JOHN B. IIABERLE,
provided with a. groove adapted to receive XVM. A. VIELE.
