UNITED STATES" vPATENT Clarion'.
'WILLIAM HENRY LAUTZENHEISER, OE ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CIIAUNCEY C. BALDWIN, OF SAME PLACE.
WIRE-DRAWING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Y' Letters Patent No. 549,322, dated November 5, 1895. Application filed July 30, 1895. Serial No. 557,573. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY LAUT- ZENHEISER, of Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Apparatus for Drawing Wire; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specilication, and represent, in-
Figure l, a plan view of a wire-drawing apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a view thereof, in vertical cross-section, on the line a b of Fig. 1.
My invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for drawing wire, the object being to produce a simple, compact, durable, and effective device Vhaving a large capacity for work of superior character and requiring the minimum of time and labor for attention and repair.
With these ends in view my invention consists in an apparatus having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ two horizontally-arranged drums A and A', both of which revolve in partial immersion in a lubricant B, located within a vat C. The drum A is mounted upon one end of a shaft D, having bearing in'boxes D D and provided at points between the said boxes with a sprocket-wheel D2, and also at a point be- A yond the box D with a xed pulley D3 and a loose pulley D4. The drum A is mounted upon a shaft D5, mounted in boxes D6 D6 and provided between the said boxes with a sprocket-wheel D7, over which passes a chainA D8, also passing over the sprocket-wheel D2, whereby the drum A is driven at the same speed as the drum A. If desired, of course the power might be applied through the shaftY D5, and by gearing instead of pulleys. A series .of dies E, arranged parallel with the drums and between them, is mounted upon a horizontal table E', supported at its inner end by a bracket E2, secured by screws E3 to the inner wall of the vat C. The said dies 'or to the flange, or both.
The lubricant, of whatever character it may be, is supplied to the dies by means of the drum A, to which a film of lubricant will adhere as the drum revolves. This film of lubricant is scraped from the top of the drum byv means of a scraper F, consisting of a long plate, the outer edge of which is reduced in thickness and concaved upon its under surface to conform to the curvature of the drum, and the inner edge of which is secured by screws f to the adjacent edge of the table E', which is constructed for the purpose with a recess or rabbet E6. The said table has formed in it at a point between the scraper E and the iange E4 a horizontal parallel trough E7, in which the lubricant scraped o from the drum A collects and through which it liows back into the vat again after having performed the office of lubricating the wire and the dies, which latter are, as shown, set down into the trough and bear against one of the side walls thereof.
It will be understood that the wire to be drawn is wound over both drums, passing, first, through the die having the largest aperture and the notch aligned therewith, thence to the drum A', down, over, and under the same, thence under, up, and over the Vdrum A to the die of the next smaller aperture and the notch aligned therewith, thence over, down, and under the drum A', thence under, up, and over the drum A, and so on. After the wire has passed through all of the dies it is wound upon a receiving-drum, which is not shown, but which may be of any suitable construction and arrangement. Another drum or reel may also be employed for feeding the Wire to be drawn to the drums.
It is apparent that in carrying out my invention some changes in the construction shown and described may be made. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact form herein shown 5 IOO but hold myself at liberty to make such variations therefrom as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invent-ion, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A l. In an apparatus for drawing wire, the combination with a yat in which a lubricant is placed, of two horizontally arranged drums, means for driving the same, a horizontal table located between the drums, a horizontallyv arranged series of dies mounted upon the said table, and a scraper mounted upon the table in a position adjacent to one of the drums from which it scrapes the lubricant adhering thereto, and brought up from the bath in which the drum is partially immersed, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus for drawing wire, thc combination with a vat in which a lubricant is placed, of two horizontally arranged drums, one of which is partially immersed in the lubricant, a horizontal table located between the drums, a series of dies secured to the said table, a scraper secured to the table in position to scrape the iilm of lubricant from the drum immersed therein and a trough located in the table at a point between the dies and scraper, and receiving the lubricant scraped off from the drum with which the scraper is in contact, substantially as described.
3. ln an. apparatus for drawing wire, the combination with a vat designed to contain a lubricant, of two horizontally arranged drums, one of which is partially immersed in the lubricant in the vat, a horizontally arranged table supported at its inner edge by a bracket attached to the inner wall of the Vat, having a longitudinal trough formed in it, a horizontal series of dies mounted upon the table, and set into the said trough, and a scraper attached to one edge of the table in position to scrape the lubricant adhering to the drum rotating in the bath thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have signed this speciiication in thc presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY LAUTZEXHEISEK.
